Okay, so I go into Verizon Wireless today to buy a cell phone. I haven't had one for over a year, need one for work, etc. Anyway, the guy shows me around, I pick out a plain phone...$79. So I've got the phone, I go up to the counter and start signing up...pick a plan, etc. Guy takes all my info, copies my DL then comes out and says "A deposit is required, would you like to pay that now or spread it out over your first 3 payments?" So I ask the natural question, "How much is the deposit?" He then responds....get this....$1000!

ONE THOUSAND FUCKING DOLLARS!!!!!!!!!

Okay, my credit is a little battlescarred, I admit. But a $1000 deposit for a piece of shit cellphone and a $39.95 a month plan? COME ON!!!! Who do these righteous bastards think they are. I just rented a new apartment and HAD NO TROUBLE WITH MY CREDIT. I also hooked up electric, cable, hi-speed internet...only one that required a deposit was the electric company and that was under $100.

So I'm highly pissed...I come home and decide...screw it, I'll just get a home phone. So I look in my apartment guidebook for the phone company provider for my area...guess what...yep...you were right...VERIZON!!!!!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

But aren't Verizon and Verizon Wireless completely separate? I would bet the regular old wired Verizon won't need a thousand bucks to hook you up.

I hate 'em both -- the wired Verizon has a monopoly on local phone service here, so they have been gouging me for years.

Try Cingulair. They just took over AT&T (who I've used for cell phone service for years) and seem pretty cool. I was going to be a little late on my last payment, so I called them up and told them and then didn't pay them for another few days and they were cool. Didn't charge me extra or anything.

Verizon is always over-priced. Why not get a pay-as-you-go T-mobile? I just got one of those, paid $79 for a phone and the first 100 minutes, but will get $40 backm so it's actually only $39. They have $10 and $25 cards, which can be purchased in stores all over the place, or over the phone. Once you have bought $100-worth of cards, you get 15% more time. Can't beat it.

The Nokia 3595 is the one I got. Lots of features, colo screen, etc.

I've never heard of such a large sum for a deposit; or any deposit for that matter on a cell phone.

In my area, for my business, Verizon has the best packages and service area, by far. I pay for 4 phones and a toal pf about 3000 minutes per month. Last month the whole package cost me $239.00; and that includes all of the taxes ( in NY the suck you dry every chance they get) and access fees.

When traveling outside of your area code, you have no roaming charges ion the USA and if you call another Verizon cell customer, the call is free, as are the calls in the group.

Sorry you are having such a bad time, though.

Thanks for the suggestions!!!

I just got off the phone with T-Mobile. I told the girl on the phone (who was SO giddy that she sounded like she was on laughing gas...she punctuated everything I said with: pppeeerrrrrffffect) about the crappy experience I had with Verizon...and that I wasn't in the best of moods. Anyway, we go through the process, I took the free phone deal described above and we get to the credit check part. I'm nervous as hell, embarrassed...I don't want to deal with that crap again...and guess what...NO DEPOSIT REQUIRED!!! NADA!!! Went through perfect with no fucking hassles.

T-Mobile rocks!

Verizon....I fart in your general direction.
