brownie
I have some various short bits from Jazz à Juan with Konitz, Solal and a host of others... could you please type out the exact info for me, so I can make sure I don't spread any live stuff that's on this disc? I guess I should try and get hold of the disc myself, but not right now, spent too much again, already... I have the vinyl original of Jazz A Juan. Here is the tracks list: side 1. a- What Is This Thing Called Love 11:26 b- You're a Weaver Of Dreams 8:54 side 2. c- Round About Midnight 10:20 d- Autumn Leaves 3:22 e- Ths Song Is You 7:55 The CD version has one additional track titled 'Antibes'. Teasing the Korean
Just picked up "Martial Solal and the European All Stars" on what appears to be a French Telefunken LP (purple label, mono. Recorded in Berlin May 21, 1961. Anyone know anything about this? I haven't spun it yet.
brownie
That French Telefunken is an unusual one. That's the album with Solal on the cover, right? The original release of it was this one on German Telefunken It's an absorbing album. I like it!
Teasing the Korean
That French Telefunken is an unusual one. That's the album with Solal on the cover, right? Yes, it's his profile at the piano, black background.

Patrick
Anyone know any of the details about Grappelli/Solal Happy Reunion due out on Sunny Side next week? Or how it compares to other Solal (or Grappelli)? According to Amazon, track listing is: 1. Shine 2. Valsitude 3. Sing for Your Supper 4. God Bless the Child 5. Nuages 6. Parisian Thoroughfare 7. Grandeur et Cadence 8. Stumbling 9. Et Si l'On Improvisait?
brownie
Happy Reunion was originally published on the French label Owl. Since I'm not much of a fan of post-Quintet du Hot Club deFrance Grappelli, I bought it mostly for Solal. I must say I found the album very worthy with Grappelli in top form. As always delighted by Solal. In other words, very recommended!
Peter Friedman
Don't remember if this CD recorded in 1991 was mentioned earlier in the thread? Martial Solal / Toots Thielemans - Erato 2292-45795-2 It's a duo session that is one I have enjoyed for a number years. The 11 tracks include 7 standards, plus "Solar" by Miles, "Waltz for Sonny" by Thielemans, "Valse a 3 temps" by Solal, and "Erato Blues" by both Solal and Toots. EKE BBB
Solal's coming to Madrid, piano solo, on May 19, as part of the XXII Jornadas de Jazz de la UPM, which are dedicated to Tete Montoliu as part of this years's conmemoration -10 years since he passed-. http://www.tomajazz.com/noticias/index.php?NOTID=979 Eagerly waiting to catch that show. EKE BBB
That French Telefunken is an unusual one. That's the album with Solal on the cover, right? The original release of it was this one on German Telefunken It's an absorbing album. I like it! More releases from that date: -Telefunken EP 7": TFR 423 - The European All Stars 1961 (1962) (Blue Monk and Hittin' The Blues, with Tete Montoliu at the piano) -Telefunken EP 7": TFK 13.007 - Teté (sic) Montoliu European All Stars 1961 (Averty, C'est Moi; Am I Blue and That Ole Devil Called Love; Spanish Telefunken EP where, despite the title, Solal is at the piano, and not Tete)
ghost of miles
Been on a Solal kick again ever since coming across WHEN A SOPRANO MEETS A PIANO while putting together an Americans-in-France show (many thanks to Brownie!). Ordered COMP. VOGUE v. 2 and 4, and v. 2 arrived today. Love that version of "Time On My Hands" with Sadi... say, Monsieur Solal turns 80 next month, correct? EKE BBB
... say, Monsieur Solal turns 80 next month, correct? Yes! Saw him a couple of months ago, piano solo, and it was a great concert. His playing was fresher and his approach to standards more exploratory than ever. Of course, his mastery and virtuosity at the keyboard were intact. And above all, he looked jovial, cheerful and funny like a youngster. For those who can read Spanish, here's the review of that concert at Tomajazz, by Arturo Mora: http://www.tomajazz.com/conciertos/2007/05...l_solal_upm.htm
B. Goren.
Martial Solal is celebrating today his 8oth birthday. I wish good health and all the best.
brownie
Damn right, Bentsy Martial Solal was deadborn on August 23, 1927 in Algiers. A few slaps had him out of the stupor a few minutes later. He has been very much alive since and keeps going... An amazingly young 80 he is now. Joyeux anniversaire, Martial! ghost of miles
Happy b-day to Monsieur Solal... we'll be featuring him on Afterglow tomorrow evening. Also just found out that I'm sitting in this afternoon for our weekday jazz jock, so maybe I'll slip a little Solal into the set list! king ubu
Congratulations to Mr. Solal! May he continue strong for as long as he wishes! (Hey, we all know it ain't gonna last forever... and in my opinion, that's a good thing, too...)

thomastreichler
I very much enjoyed the 1956 solo sessions of Solal on "The Complete Vogue Recordings Vol. 2". I just came across another one, "Improvise pour France Musique", a 2-CD set on JSM which got a rave review in the Penguin Guide. The set seems not to be easily available; finally ordered it from a Swiss online dealer. Let's see if they are able to deliver.
