tonym
yu know me, I want stuff yesterday! Anyway, done the searches but I couldn't get right answer. Which Bill Evans biog? I'll be back online this lunchtime (when you're all in bed over there). If the collective knowledge can't provide me with the definitive result, I'm going. Packing my bags for Jazz Corner Now I know you won't respond.
Michael Fitzgerald
Start with the Pettinger - the other one isn't nearly as meaty. Mike
tonym
That's great Mike, thanks (I was secretly hoping someone from my mental 'wishlist' of experts would respond ). It's going to be ordered in about 45 seconds. Thanks again.
Bright Moments
ok while we're asking quick questions, which is the best charlie parker biography? B-)
Michael Fitzgerald
Woideck. But apparently one should get the paperback rather than the hardcover as some corrections were made. Mike
AllenLowe
there's also an old Max Harrison monograph on Bird - and much as it pains me to say, I think Giddins's book is very good - Edited March 24, 2005 by AllenLowe
Bright Moments
thanks guys!!! B-)
Michael Fitzgerald
BTW, Brian Priestley is working on a Bird book. I have his "little" Bird book (part of the Kings of Jazz series) - which is still quite good as a primer. Judging by his Mingus book, I have a feeling his upcoming one on Parker will be outstanding. bertrand
I wish Brian could update his Mingus book, which I think is a gem. He could use the Mingus collection at LoC. Bertrand.
tonym
I think we need a 'sticky' "Quick questions for Mike Fitz..." thread Can mods put one up, if Michael has a few weeks to spare answering questions
Michael Fitzgerald
No need for a special thread - I'm happy to butt into any topic that grabs my attention (just try to keep me away!). Should anyone ever want an answer off-board - do NOT use the PM function, but instead send me an email. Mike
Brad
What do you think of the Reisner book. I've heard people say that what he says in there you can take with a grain of salt.
Michael Fitzgerald
The word is that some of the folks fed Reisner some tall tales. Still probably of value. I haven't looked at mine in a while. The Ross Russell is another one that doesn't place much importance on accuracy. Mike
Chuck Nessa
At least Reisner and Russell capture some feeling of the time which is missing from many since. Not easy to discount (in my book). Some of this is more important than "facts".
AllenLowe
the Russell book is, indeed well written; it's just that I've talked to a few of the people who were witness and or participants to events depicted in the bio, and they, to a man, said that it was virtually all invented by Russell (I am speaking of Howard McGhee, Al Haig, Curley Russell, Duke Jordan, and Tommy Potter) -
