kh1958 Posted March 24, 2005 Report Posted March 24, 2005 I've long admired the 1949 Prestige Session featuring Lennie Tristano, Lee Konitz and Billy Bauer that produced Progression/Tautology/Retrospection/Subconscious Lee/Judy. I first heard this when I purchased a two LP set called Prestige First Sessions. Yesterday I picked up a Lee Konitz OJC which includes these sessions. I'm wondering--who was the actual leader of the session? My LP set indicates Lennie Tristano was the leader, whereas the OJC seems to indicate that Lee Konitz was the leader. Quote
ghost of miles Posted March 24, 2005 Report Posted March 24, 2005 Not this session, but what was the Konitz/Marsh one around the same time where they were arguing about how to pursue a tune, prompting another musician to pop his head in the door and say, "Why don't you guys ask the witch doctor?" According to my very old copy of PRESTIGE JAZZ RECORDS 1949-1971: a discography by Michel Ruppoli, the session you mention is the 1st listed. Recorded in NY on January 11, 1949, it is credited to the Lennie Tristano Quintet. Hope that helps. Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted March 24, 2005 Report Posted March 24, 2005 I have the 78s and the labels say LENNIE TRISTANO QUINTET. Quote
AllenLowe Posted March 24, 2005 Report Posted March 24, 2005 (edited) that was Al Haig who suggested they call the witch doctor - and, from what I've heard, the assembled musicians were not amused - Edited March 24, 2005 by AllenLowe Quote
kh1958 Posted March 25, 2005 Author Report Posted March 25, 2005 Thanks for the information. This is an excellent OJC (Sub-Conscious Lee), which also features the referenced session with Warne Marsh (another good one), plus a third session with Billy Bauer. Quote
