Cuban Music

Hi.

Just finished reading a great article in this months Jazzwise, on Juan who one of the mastermind's behind the success of the 'Buena Vista Social Club', and has been a leading light in cuban jazz for a long time.

I am a great fan of Cuban music in general and have many albums of one sort or another. The mixture of piano, trumpets, congas is something I never get tired of listening to.

Anyone familier with Juan's music or Cuban music/Jazz in general? Or do you have any recommendations?

Unless you are specifically trying to separate Cuban jazz from Afro-Cuban jazz, in which case I apologize.

In the artical I read, Gonzales talkes about the "sound of today's Cuba".

There are timbas, the most modern and aggressive style, there is contemporary danzon, using vibraphone and a mix of classical and traditional cuban music. Add to this mixture jazz and for me this is what makes the music so appealing.

Gonzalez plays the guitar, of late he plays the six string tres.

I have a couple of albums form the collaboration with 'World Muisc' and 'Sierra Maestra'. He comments;

" I have always thought that Cuban music was becoming too Americanised. When you live in a country that's isolated, it is tempting to believe that everything outside of it is much better"

And so in albums like "Dundunbanza" and "Tibiri Tabara", I think we see cuban music at its best, Great rhythms and horn lines etc etc.

I saw Juan Marcos Gonzalez' orchestra live a year or two after the movie was out, and was disappointed, as it was a rather conservative approach towards Cuban casino style dance music. The classic tunes he played sounded like routine jobs - check out Arsenio Rodriguez' original version of Dundumbanza! - available on a Tumbao CD. Most modern bands sound cold compared to the groove of Arsenio!

Recently saw Cachaito's band on TV, again nothing innovative, but excellent descarga stylings.

Their conga player Minguel Anga Diaz has a new disc coming up on World Circuit - I was sent a review copy. This disc is much more representative of modern Cuban stylings.

For an example how lively this Cuban big band style already sounded in the 1960's, try a Palladium CD titled "Tumbao Cubano" - Juan Marcos Gonzalez hasn't added one note to this music.
