"I think what Lon is saying is that he has trouble getting past that pose."

well, this speaks to an old issue, as in "why can't the artist I admire be a nicer guy?" But just as Ben Webster abused women and Bill Evans was a complete and utter mess personally, such arguments are irrelevant to the actual accomplishments of the artist. The point is that, for many performers, the only place in their lives that is under control and personally focused is the form of creation - music, or painting, or novels, etc etc. Frank was a complicated guy but the thing that worked for him was the music -

Yeah, and I just don't like his work. It's me. I do think that his personality---especially if you watch him live often---intrudes into the work in a different manner than a lot of the instrumentalists you mention; their personalities don't seem as pronounced in the music as Sinatra's does to me. He SOUNDS like the kind of asshole I hate to be around. And so I don't hang with Frankie. . . .

I can recognize his importance, though I think others (Pops, Bessie, Billie) may ultimately be more important for American pop and jazz music. But I just don't like him.

Just don't get me started guys. . . I really dislike the whole RatPack concept of cool, musically and extramusically.

Aaaaaaaah, so now we begin to get to the root of your aversion to Ol' Blue Eyes.

You people have me lost somewhere

This is supposed to be about a Ray Nance disc. Right?

Did Sinatra record with Nance?

How come most of the posts here are about Sinatra :o:o

Allright, allright, Lon! And I'll be waiting for your report on this Ray Nance opus!

Didn't think Ol' Blue Eyes and Sigmund would make an appearance with Ray Nance! Even in a typical Organissimo thread going off path!

An unholy Three

Wow, this Ray Nance thread really did get off the tracks didn't it?. Just thought I'd mention another little known Nance violin album. I'm currently in the process of getting another batch of rare LPs transferred to CDR. One of these, on Solid State, was recorded in May of 1969 by Ray Nance with two pianists, Jaki Byard and Sir Roland Hanna (Hanna also plays organ on the date), two guitarists, Tiny Grimes and Tommy Lucas, bassist Carl Pruitt and drummer Steve Little. There's no trumpet playing here from Nance, just violin. He also sings a bit and he did the arrangements. And tenor saxophonist Brew Moore is added on two numbers. The album's another of those sleepers that seems to have been totally overlooked.

The album's called "Body and Soul" and it's on Solid State SS 18062. It's only been reissued (on LP) in Japan except for three titles that were bootlegged, once again just on LP, by the Italian label, Unique Jazz.

Sounds like a beaut! Is anyone reissuing the Solid State catalog?
