Jazz Kat Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 I got my first gig tonight. My drum teacher recommended me to play at this club. Their usual drummer can't make it, so I got recommended. I can't wait! Packing up my drums and about to head out soon. This should be awesome! Quote

Your first gig...and if you become big time, you'll be able to look back at the "early" days and share some wild stories - I seriously mean this! Quote
Jazz Kat Posted August 29, 2005 Author Report Posted August 29, 2005 Will do. I hope I don't let my sticks fall out of my hands from me greasin my hair. I guess we'll play some standards, blues, ballads, and of course, my favorite, Watermelon Man!!! Quote
Guest akanalog Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 watch out for this too-one time i was carrying my snare up the basement stairs to pack into my car to play a show and i didn't clear the bannister with the snare and the snare bounced back at me because i was rushing so fast and smashed me in the nose and broke my nose. sort of hard to describe but i basically hit myself in the face with my snare drum. Dan Gould Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Congratulations, and do tell us all about it afterwards. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted August 30, 2005 Author Report Posted August 30, 2005 It was a nice experience. We played Maiden Voyage, Watermelon Man, There Will Never Be Another You, St. Thomas, Girl From Ipanema, Mr. P.C., Triste, Equinox, Night In Tunisia, All Blues, All The Things You Are, Four, On Green Dolphin Street, Summertime, and a couple more. There were two guitarists, a saxophonist, keyboardist, bass player, and me. It was pretty cool. Afterwards, the guy who runs it asked me if I would be apart of this group full time. It worked out pretty good, except this guitar player played A Night In TUnisia with us and messed it up because he hadn't done the arrangement me, the saxist, and bass player worked on for weeks. It turned out ok. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 how were you working out the arrangement for weeks? it sounded like this was a last minute pick-up date? Quote
Guest akanalog Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 or oh i thought your teacher recommended you to play with this other ensemble where the drummer couldn't go, but did he recommend your whole ensemble to play instead of this other drummer's ensemble? Quote
Jazz Kat Posted August 30, 2005 Author Report Posted August 30, 2005 how were you working out the arrangement for weeks? it sounded like this was a last minute pick-up date? ← My band is a sax player, bassist, and me. Our guitarist moved to Las Vegas for school, so we been a trio lately. Yesterday, they call me up and ask me if I can play this gig where the people in my band would be there, plus several other guys. After we played a few, the other guys left and us as a trio started to play our arrangement of A Night In Tunisia. After about the first chorus the guitarist jumps in, not knowing the arrangement. (We play the melody in 12/8) Quote

We just call out whatever tunes we want. One of them happened to be A Night In Tunisia, in which we did it in the arrangement my trio always does. Quote
rostasi Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 So you played some good tunes, had fun, had a minor - understandable - clash on Tunisia, and were asked to join the group full time! Sounds pretty successful to me! Quote
Jazz Kat Posted August 31, 2005 Author Report Posted August 31, 2005 Yup. I just gotta get my parents to take me out all the time now. Quote
Guy Berger Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 Ah, the parents -- only a few more years and this will no longer be a hitch. Congrats on a successful gig. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 My dad used to help me load and unload my Hammond M3 and drive me to and from the gigs. Talk about support!!! Quote
