Soul Stream Posted July 7, 2003 Report Share Posted July 7, 2003 Man, after the "Endgame Brilliance" debacle....I really thought about the demise of 32 Jazz. When they went out of business, I did the best I could to scoop up the titles I could think to get. Knowing full well, I wouldn't be able to get many I'd want in the future. No other label put out such a massive quantity of good stuff in such a short time. Stuff that'd never see the light of day in the real world. A lot of organ stuff and "second tier" sessions. 32 Jazz is sorely missed by me. I know there's others. Now's the time to vent. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It certainly made me a believer in the arguement that the cover doesn't make the music! There was a lot of "average" music so to speak. But it's music that for the most part would never have been reissued by most anyone. I mean "Lockin' Horns" with Von Freeman and Willis Jackson certainly isn't the best live album ever made, but it gives a real snapshot of the times. And, to my ears, the music made during this time is some of the most neglected in jazz. Many of our legends are represented here, maybe not in their most important work, but unarguabley in their playing primes. The 70's and 80's were tough on these guys, and 32 Jazz brought to light a lot of great work I'd never of heard of otherwise. The Woody Shaws are a great example of this. Hasn't Dorn started yet another label since the demise of the last label that came after 32 Jazz? By the way, how is it possible for Dorn to continue to start new labels with all the labels of his that have gone out of business? But I had already invested in the original LPs that I found interesting when they came out. Wish that 32 Jazz had released more unissued recordings like the Zoot Sims 'Live in Philly' or the Roland Kirk 'Dog Years in the 4th Ring' set. Those were superb. Dreadful covers. Someone figured that because they bought a computer graphics program they could be an art director. As I understand it, Dorn was just running 32Jazz and Label M. I got all the Woody Shaw and most of the Kirks (except those I had on Rhino/Atlantic, already), the two Cliff Jordans, the two Sonny Criss discs, the Altschul (now that's a very good one!), Joe Chambers, Lockjaw (another great one), some Cedar Walton, the Mobley/Walton... And it seems the new Savoy reissues do have the very same terrible covers... then the big question: DOES SAVOY HAVE ANY RELEASE SCHEDULE? Their new releases section does not feature any of the Muse/32/Landmark releases that are out. Neither can the late 90ies reissues be found. Those last ones had an Atlantic imprint on the cover (like the Cannonball 2CD, Navarro, Dorham, Blakey, Coltrane/Harden etc). ubu Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The Horace one goes well with the "Cape Verdean Blues" album, with live versions of some of the BN tracks. The MC sounds like Alan Grant. I assume that these Horace recordings are pirate. If so, then Joel Dorn's notes to the 1994 Ram Records release confirm that the tracks were recorded by Alan Grant from live broadcasts that he hosted in 1965/66. In fact, the one I have (Kenny Burrell's LISTEN TO THE DAWN, released in 2001) was never released on CD in the U.S. I couldn't find a list of the Japanese issues, and I'm wondering whether they were mainly "Japan only" like my Burrell CD... Right now playing this excellent Don Patterson disc, "Steady Comin' at 'ya", combining the album "These Are Soulful Days" (with Jimmy & Tootie Heath and Pat Martino) with three bonus tracks from "Movin' Up" and "The Return of Don Patterson" (all on Muse).
