I've fallen under the spell of this record recently in a SERIOUS way. This may be one of the greatest trio recordings ever and certainly a gorgeous example of what made Wynton Kelly my favorite pianist.

Anybody else have a facsination with this album?

I have unconditional love for Wynton Kelly. He comps great behind soloists, plays beautiful melodic horn-like right hand lines and can get a Timmons-like bluesy feel when desired. He's in my top five favorite pianists.

Besides his own leader recordings I love him on Roll Call, Cannonball Adderley Quintet Plus , Smokin' at the Half Note, Lee Morgan's Dizzy Atmosphere, Newk's Time, Miles' Blackhawk.......any many more.

He's in that category "if he's on it, I'll buy it".

I'm so glad I got the VeeJay Mosaic.

This is one time when I can say with no reservations the words I LOVE WYNTON! :g

I LOVE WYNTON TOO!!!! I'm also bummed that I slept on the Mosaic. Couldn't help it in a sense that it "timed out" or something like that. To my knowledge, one day it was there and the next day wasn't, unlike most slowly dwindling Mosaics. Anyway, sour grapes on my part!

Still, you're right. If Wynton's on it, I'll buy it.

Just ordered the Wynton trio live with Joe Henderson last night. Do you have that one Free For All? I was surprised at hour good the quality was on the sound clips given the Mobley/wynton trio recording from the previous year sounded so bad.

Big Wynton fan here too. With the possible exception of Sonny Clark, my favorite comper. First cabin Kelly can be heard on the Dragon Records release Miles Davis in Sweden. This is a multi-disc set that has much to recommend it. In addition to some prime Kelly, beaucoup de Coltrane and several tunes with his short-lived replacement in the quintet, Sonny Stitt. It also features a radio interview with Trane. This is one of my favorite CD releases in many years.

Up over and out.

Re: the Kelly/Henderson live recording - I find it pretty amazing in spots, but I feel that Kelly and Henderson does not always mesh with eachother in terms of style. Other opinions are of course more than welcome. Regarding the label Lone Hill Jazz - don't they have a reputation of not always clearing music rights prior to releasing stuff, no? 'Four' and 'Straight, No Chaser' still appear to be available from Verve.

dusty has this for $18

Same running order as Four! and Straight, No Chaser except for one bonus trio cut at the end of each disc. Whew, what a relief!

Though if you buy the 2 disc set you file under "K" while the individual discs are filed under "H."

And that takes care of the scorekeeping questions. Now on to the remastering.

I snagged both of these as soon as they came out, admittedly more for the presence of JoeHen than Wynton. Much as I love Wynton, I think Joe is the real star of these sides. Wynton very wisely comps relatively sparsely when Joe is blowing. And Joe does sound great on these. The trio swings hard and provides a great bed for Joe, but there's not a lot of interaction.

Still A+ music though.

Uh, actually I don't think they've ever cleared music rights prior to reissuing material.

...and now back to our scheduled program... :D

Anybody want to comment on Wynton Kelly!(The Vee Jay LP). This thing swings like hell. The piano sounds great and Paul and Jimmy are swinging for the fences as well. Wynton never sounded better to these ears. Songs are relatively short, but in a good way, no bullshit involved. When the logical thinking was still to play 3 or 4 choruses for the most part and get out.

Total agreement here! :tup:tup

(Will have to re-listen to Wynton Kelly!----I remember liking it a lot when I first got the Mosaic, but I haven't listened to it in a while.)

Well, I gave it several more listens yesterday, and yes, it's terrific music. One thing I'd forgotten, though, is the bad case of "altake-itus" it has. This has always been one of Mosaic's drawbacks, and when there are four or five takes of composition, and you have to burrow into the liner notes just to find out which take is can be considered the master, that almost becomes consumer abuse. It reminds me of why I've got so many edited tapes of Mosaic collections littering my house.

..."altake-itus"...

Around 20 years ago buddy of mine who was a big Wynton Kelly fan had this and I remember listening to it a lot with him. Good stuff. I'll have to track down a copy.

I've got the 2-CD reissue of this. It's perfect. Original LP on CD1 with all the alts on the 2nd CD. And the alts on THIS particular album are all master take worthy and wonderful.

All the alts on a 2nd CD----that sounds great. All the alternates ARE worthy on this, but for godsake, give us the album first THEN the alternates. That's all I ask.

This is another thing about Mosaic...if you wait long enough, most of their sets will be commercially issued by SOMEbody, and these days it often doesn't take too long.

Sad but true. I was just thinking the other day that the original Mosaic mission is being carried out better by the Select series these days. All the early Mosaics I bought (Monk, Brown, Nichols, etc.) were pretty short compared to the massive sets they put out now. The selects are similar in scope to those early Mosaics, except the artists, worthy as they are, are less epochal.
