Jazz Kat
I just discovered these two bands pretty recently. The Bad Plus on thursday and Happy Apple about 2 minutes ago. I previewed some samples of Bad Plus at the store, and Happy Apple on amazon. It sounded cool, but I haven't heard enough to make an opinion about the two. Anybody have experience listening to their stuff?

clifford_thornton
I generally do not like either, but I did see a very good set by Happy Apple once, with French baritone player Francois Courneloup sitting in. It sounded like John Surman meets the Soft Machine, which is certainly not a bad thing...
jazzypaul
I liked the first two albums by the Bad Plus. Give and Suspicious Activity have seemed like ass on a stick, however. That said, Happy Apple is a motherfucker of a band. I've dug everything they've done. Of course, I liked Night of the Cookers, too.
Miles251
Michael Lewis, saxophonist with Happy Apple, is quickly becoming one of my favorite "younger" players. I find his playing to be steeped in history and soul, spiced with harmonic adventurousness...well worth a listen. I really enjoy "Fat Kids Wednesday" as well, with Michael, JT Bates on drums and Adam Linz on bass. New side with Don Cherry tunes is wonderful.
