I don't get the Varby joke...

So, probably the coolest signing response (maybe) I got was from Lacy, who upon seeing the "Moon" LP (BYG) said, promptly, "you know these guys were gangsters, right?" He signed that beautiful back cover anyway!

Oh yeah, Karl Berger signed my copy of his ESP record, and his response was "who's this skinny kid on the cover?" Classic!

I think it's too bad that people don't write letters so much anymore. It's all email now. Old hand-written letters are really interesting to look at (like the ones Chris A. shares with us). And so much more personal. I think that they're special because someone took the time and effort to create them.

I also kind of regret that everyone uses computer music notation programs to do arrangements. It's very convenient, true, but there's no personality to the parts anymore. Everything looks the same. I've always enjoyed connecting a specific type on manuscript with a specific writer.

Am I becoming "old" and/or "fogey"-like?

After school, I never thought of collecting autographs. From those days I have Basie and a bunch of guys from the band circa '62 and the Gillespie quintet in transition - Diz, Moody, Lalo, Chris White & Rudy Collins.

I do have a copy of John Patton's "Understanding" signed "to Stan, John Patton, organ" but obviously I bought the lp used.

I do have some contracts and checks signed by famous musicians. :)

This reminds me of a story Roscoe Mitchell told me about 25 years ago (if I told this before, forgive me). Roscoe was teaching a bunch of young/aspiring musicians and Sonny Rollins came to spend some time with his students. At the end of the session everybody lined up to get Sonny's autograph. Sonny signed them all and Roscoe thinks "this is one of my idols, I should get one too". When Rock presented his piece of paper Rollins says "You're one of the cats, I can't do that". Roscoe told me this with equal amounts of pride and regret.

I only have one: An Eastern Rebellion Timeless LP signed by Cedar Walton.

Reading about Benny Golson above, I could kick myself I didn't ask him for one earlier this years at a local concert ....

I have a couple of signed (original) Blue Note LP's, such as: Smithville (Louis Smith), The Scene Changes (Bud Powell), Gettin' Around (Dexter Gordon) and Groovin' at Small's Paradise (Jimmy Smith). Also a New Jazz LP - A Change of Direction -, signed by Walt Dickinson (and his wife).

All signatures were dedicated to the original owner of the LP's, whose (huge) jazz collection has been sold after his dead by Amsterdam's largest second hand record shop.

Never been a big thing for me ....ever I guess. I have met only a handful of heros

Reuben Wilson, Charles Macpherson and Dave Honeyboy Edwards (blues guy )

and I was just in a state of awe. We talked a little and that was cool but I guess I could have got Reuben to sign all my LPs I had of him but never thought too and do not regret it. However I guess others would have done and that is cool too :)

(anyway I have since sold the lps and I am sure someone would have moaned about writing on the cover..........this leads me to the bigger issue..when buying autographs or autographed records...how do you know it was them???

You don't, unless you know the previous owner. On the other hand: I have the experience that signed jazz records are not collectable (or wanted) at all (pop/rock records is another story). Collectors of jazz records seem to prefer clean jackets. So there is no obvious reason why anyone would fake a signature.

I had all the Blue Note organists that ever played my B3 sign the inside.  It includes....

Big John Patton

Jack McDuff

Jimmy McGriff

Reuben Wilson

...sadly, Jimmy Smith played that B3 on 3 different gigs but never would sign it.

....what a surprise! -_-

I have a few signed LP and cds but most of what I have signed are my photographs of them. Without fail, if I see a musician that I have photographed before, I always give them a matted print. This generally jumpstarts a conversation on when/where it was taken, who they were playing with, why they are wearing what they are wearing, their hair style and so forth. I saw Russell Malone, John Clayton and Monty Alexander do a tribute to Ray Brown shortly after Ray died. I have some nice images of Ray from one of his final shows and gave each one of them a print. Each one of them also signed one print for me. I've seen Russell Malone a few times since then and the first words out of his mouth is usually, "Hey, where's my picture"!!!

Anyway, I have no qualms about asking for an autograph if the times right!

When I was a photographer / student, that was always nice to give them a nice print. So often these musicians have a camera stuck in their face and never see any photos.

Keep up the good work!
