Philadelphia concerts

This isn't jazz, but might be of interest to some:

A Morton Feldman Festival:

Bowerbird is proud to present AMERICAN SUBLIME, the first major festival in Philadelphia devoted to the singular music of Morton Feldman (1926-87), Saturday, June 4 - Sunday, June 12. The festival is includes seven concerts at venues throughout the city, with performances by some of the leading Feldman interpreters of our time. AMERICAN SUBLIME focuses on music from the last years of Feldman's life, all of it heard for the first time in Philadelphia. The centerpiece is an extremely rare performance of his monumental, six-hour String Quartet No. 2, which concludes the festival at the Philadelphia Cathedral on June 12.

Music critic Kyle Gann remarks that "in the current Babel of musical styles, Feldman is almost the only composer whose music appeals across stylistic boundaries, among minimalists, postserialists, 12-tone holdouts, electronic composers, academics, Downtowners, MAX programmers, DJ artists, and other miscellaneous wastrels." Feldman's utterly unique musical language, abstract yet deeply personal, leaves an indelible impression.

AMERICAN SUBLIME takes its name from the title of an essay by critic/author Alex Ross on Feldman's music, capturing two essential qualities of Feldman's music: the vital place it occupies in the American experimental tradition, and the numinous, otherworldly quality of the music itself, akin to the paintings of the composer's close friend, Mark Rothko.

performed by the S.E.M ENSEMBLE, THOMAS BUCKER, JOSEPH KUBERA,

and ROSCOE MITCHELL-EVAN PARKER DUO

German Society of Pennsylvania, 611 Spring Garden Street

$15 General Admission

“Even in the jazz avant-garde, Roscoe Mitchell qualifies as an iconoclast.

He uses ideas from Western and non-Western classical music, as well as the

jazz tradition, to write music that swings like mad or, deliberately,

doesn't swing at all.” -The New York Times

In celebration of Roscoe Mitchell's 70th birthday, please join Ars Nova

Workshop for night one of our Composer Portrait: Roscoe Mitchell series

featuring various chamber works written throughout his career including

"Non-Cognitive Aspects of the City" and "NONAAH" (for chamber ensemble),

"three poems by e.e. cummings (for piano and voice)," and "8-8-88" (for

piano). Tonight will also feature a very special duo performance by Roscoe

Mitchell and British saxophonist Evan Parker.

music writer Nate Chinen and Mitchell: they will discuss the AACM's legacy

and future, as well as Mitchell's current work.

A leader in the field of avant-garde jazz and contemporary music,

composer-performer Roscoe Mitchell is a founding member of the world

renowned Art Ensemble of Chicago, the AACM, and the Trio Space. His role in

the resurrection of long neglected woodwind instruments of extreme register,

his innovation as a solo woodwind performer, and his reassertion of the jazz

composer into what has traditionally been an improvisational form have

placed him at the forefront of contemporary music for over four decades. He

has recorded over 90 albums and has written over 250 compositions, which

range from classical to contemporary, wild and forceful, and free jazz to

ornate chamber music. He is currently a faculty member at Mills College, and

has recently worked with Vijay Iyer, Dave Burrell, Muhal Richard Abrams,

Craig Taborn, the Janåcek Philharmonic, and the S.E.M. Ensemble.

I went to both nights. Unfortunately I missed the first half of Saturday's concert - including Roscoe playing a improvised duet w/ Evan Parker. I heard that the show opened up w/ "8-8-88" that was played on a Bosendorfer by the S.E.M.'s pianist. This was followed by a duet w/ the pianist and Thomas Buckner and then the Roscoe/EP duet. The Saturday night show was in a big room that easily sat 250 and it was packed! Sunday's show was at a smaller venue and was very well attended. Both night's performances were great. Unfortunately Saturday night went unrecorded. Alas. Sunday's performance was recorded w/ Roscoe's blessing, however. I enjoyed the two pieces that the Orchestra of the S.E.M. Ensemble performed on Saturday, with Nonaah being the highlight. Come to think of it that performance was really incredible w/ the expanded orchestra. Roscoe looked to be in a great mood all weekend and played his socks off on Sunday night. Hard to believe that he's 70.

Incredible and awe-inspiring. Kirby, I was looking for you--sorry we didn't connect! It's going to take me some time to process what I heard. Completely unreal. Chuck, you weren't able to cover the miles, I assume. A long way.

I feel so fortunate and lucky to have ARS-NOVA making this stuff happen in my back yard.
