COMPOSITION N.103 (for Seven Trumpets)

Taylor Ho Bynum, Tim Byrnes, Forbes Graham, Sam Hoyt, John McDonough, Nicole

Rampersaud and Nate Wooley, trumpet; and Anthony Braxton, conductor

COMPOSITION N.169 (for Brass Quintet)

Taylor Ho Bynum, trumpet; Nate Wooley, trumpet; Jeremy Thal, French horn;

Reut Regev, trombone; Jay Rozen, tuba; and Anthony Braxton, conductor

St. Mark's Church, 1625 Locust Street

$10 General Admission

Anthony Braxton’s Composition N.103 (for Seven Trumpets) features 145 pages

of notated music and choreography for seven costumed instrumentalists

(costume design by Rosemary Kielnecker). Composed in 1983, the 45-minute

piece was first performed in 2005, in a fully staged and costumed

realization at Wesleyan University celebrating Braxton’s 60th birthday.

ANW's performance will be the Philadelphia premiere, and only the third

performance anywhere, of this major work!

Composition N.169 (for Brass Quintet) is one of the seminal pieces in the

composer’s oeuvre, yet has only once been performed by the intended

instrumentation. Written for brass quintet (on swivel chairs), N.169

consists of an hour of intense and unrelenting rhythmic complexity,

contrasting with sections of lush, static harmonies. Until now, Braxton

never found an ensemble brave enough to tackle the imposing piece. This ANW

performance marks only the second time this composition will be staged with

its original instrumentation.

MATTHEW SHIPP TRIO

Matthew Shipp, piano

Joe Morris, double-bass

Whit Dickey, drums

Philadelphia Art Alliance, 251 S. 18th Street

$12 General Admission

Matthew Shipp returns to Philadelphia with his latest working trio to

celebrate "Harmonic Disorder", his new recording on Thirsty Ear Records.

Joined by Whit Dickey on drums and Joe Morris on bass, Shipp's latest

acoustic trio rings with fresh material that highlights his expansive

musical vocabulary. In his distinct style, pianist Matthew Shipp worked and

recorded vigorously during the 1990s, creating music in which free jazz and

modern classical intertwine. He first became known in the early '90s as the

pianist in the critically-acclaimed David S. Ware Quartet, and soon began

leading his own dates - often including Ware-bandmate and bassist William

Parker - and recording a number of duets with a various musicians, from the

legendary Roscoe Mitchell to violinist Mat Maneri. Since, Shipp has recorded

with DJ Spooky, Wadada Leo Smith, Evan Parker, J. Spaceman (Spiritualized),

Daniel Carter, High Priest and Beans of Antipop Consortium, and El-P.
