RDK Posted November 11, 2005 Report Posted November 11, 2005 A senior Homeland Security official cautioned entertainment companies against discouraging piracy in ways that also make computers vulnerable. Stewart Baker, assistant secretary for policy at DHS, did not cite Sony by name in his remarks Thursday but described industry efforts to install hidden files on consumers' computers. "It's very important to remember that it's your intellectual property, it's not your computer," Baker said at a trade conference on piracy. "And in the pursuit of protection of intellectual property, it's important not to defeat or undermine the security measures that people need to adopt in these days." Finally, Homeland Security has done something useful. (just kidding) The thing is, the XCP "spyware" does nothing to stop anyone from copying discs if they really want to. It won't deter pirates at all and only annoys consumers. Quote

Claude Posted November 12, 2005 Report Posted November 12, 2005 (edited) For the music industry, the lesson from the Sony XCP disaster is: - don't use any copyprotection schemes OR - use "dumb" copyprotection schemes like EMI's CopyControl, which is harmless for the PC but allows for no copies at all The problem withe the XCP system is that it intends to permit a limited number of copies (3), but in order to enforce this limitation the PC needs to be controlled by low-level DRM software, which can have all sorts of unwanted side-effects.
