Johnny Damon to the Yanks.

Up over and out.

All the reports out of New Yawk say the Yanks are far more interested in other options, even the combustible Milton Bradley, than they are in satisfying Damon's demands. They're also afraid that by the end of the contract, Damon's skills will have eroded to Bernie Williams' recent play, and they don't want a repeat of that.

BTW, I'm pretty sure I started a hot stove thread after the season ended, but this one will do nicely. :D

AP report:

Orioles won't bring back Sosa, Palmeiro

Posted: 11 hours ago

BALTIMORE - The Baltimore Orioles have officially announced that they will not be bringing back outfielder Sammy Sosa or first baseman Rafael Palmeiro.

"At this point, we are heading in a different direction," club executive vice president Mike Flanagan said.

Palmeiro and Sosa have indicated that they would like to return to baseball in 2006.

But the prospects of either re-joining the Orioles dwindled dramatically after both suffered through terrible seasons.

Sosa, who turned 37 Saturday, came to the Orioles in a Feb. 2 trade with the Chicago Cubs for second baseman Jerry Hairston and two minor leaguers. After hitting 35 or more homers in each year since the strike-shortened 1994 season, Sosa was expected to provide an immediate offensive boost while batting cleanup behind Tejada.

Instead, he hit just .221 with 14 homers (his fewest since 1992) and 45 RBIs in 102 games.

Palmeiro's season included collecting his 3,000 career hit in July, and within weeks, being suspended for failing a drug test. Palmeiro, 41, continues to deny he intentionally took steroids, but he has no concrete proof as to why stanozolol was found in his system during a May drug test.

Both players are now unrestricted free agents. Palmeiro is expected to attempt a comeback to help restore his reputation, and Sosa needs just 12 homers to reach the No. 600 milestone.

It's been several weeks since the season ended, and I'm getting the shakes!

You too!?!? I thought I was the only one. I been checking the SI Truth & Rumors section everyday for the past week.

Let's start it with a somewhat surprising move by the Cubs...(I guess they will win the series in '06!)

Cubs tell Garciaparra to seek better fit elsewhere

Where will he end up????

This might seem far-fetched, but the Dodgers are in desperate need at third base -- why not Nomar? Sign him at a cut-rate price, loaded with incentives, it might turn out better than at first glance.

This is a good mlb rumor site that gets updated everyday:

http://www.prosportsdaily.com/mlb/mlbrumors.html

Thanks for the link!

I didn't know that the Mariners were courting a catcher from Japan (he'd be the first if he signs.) While I know you have to adjust the numbers downward some he still looks like a step up from last year. Though Pudge Rodriguez's statue of himself would be an improvement over last year too.

Mmmm, must read other team's rumors. :rsmile: Thanks for the fix!

Man, it had gotten so bad, I almost thought about joining ESPN's Insider!

Mike Cameron to the Padres for Xavier Nady. I don't know much about Nady, but Mike Cameron is one hell of a player. He covers center field like Griffey Jr. in his prime. He hits 25-30 homers a year and is one of these players that lifts an entire team up with his ebulliant personality and leadership. The Padres lucked out on this deal...as long as Cameron is healthy and can still see.

Well, its a shocking deal, certainly, because Cameron was considered to be worth a heckuva lot more than what San Diego is apparently giving. Wasn't he supposed to end up as part of a package for Manny? I have to guess that Cameron's stock has gone way down since that collission.

I'm also not at all certain he's quite the superstar Johnny makes him out to be. Yes, he's won a couple of gold gloves. But its a stretch to say that he's an automatic 25-30 homer guy. In the seven seasons he's played at least 140 games, he's hit 25 homers twice, 30 once. The other years were 8, 18, 19 and 21. He's also a .249 lifetime BA and he strikes out a ton.

Frankly, I'll be glad if this trade goes through cuz that means he won't end up in Fenway, where he couldn't carry Manny's son's jock.

Don't sell Nagy too short. I saw him play here for the Portland Beavers, the Padre's AAA affiliate. He ain't bad. I think Cameron is overrated. He's had a couple of good years and he's a better than average center fielder, but not as good as some crack him up to be.

With regard to the discussion of the ESPN Insider, I agree with Johnny...under no circumstances should this be joined. It only encourages these people to continue scamming the public by charging you to read the good stuff. My word, don't they make enough money as it is?

Dan, I agree with you on Damon. A failed attempt on my part to tweak your Red Sox sensibilities.

Up over and out.

Dave, don't be so quick to dismiss Damon and the Yanks. I read on that rumour page that if Damon's price goes to 4 years/44 million, they'd be interested.

Cameron is not a superstar, but he's a good player to have on your team. I'm a couple years removed from seeing him play day in and day out, but when he was on the Mariners he was one of the best centerfielders I'd ever seen. Gooddeal for the Padres.

The rumors in NY are that the Cameron/Nady deal was made by the mets for two reasons: 1)payroll flexibility(Cameron makes around 6-7 mil this year, Nady 500m) 2) Part one of a Manny deal.

Dan, you may get Nady on the Bosox.

If Nady gets moved again, it will be to Tampa Bay for Huff and/or Baez. They might be flipped to Boston for Manny. There's no indication that the Sox have any interest whatsoever in Nady, unless he was a minor throw-in with far bigger names doing the heavy lifting to get Ramirez. And even then I don't see it happening. The only way the Mets get Manny is to give up their stud outfield prospect, Milledge. Not some mediocre draft pick who showed modest talent in his first year in the bigs.

Interesting tidbits on the Yankees page of that MLB rumor site:

Pavano wants out of New York

But after his failed season, who would take that bloated contract off their hands, even with this thin crop of free agent pitchers?

BJ Ryan really isn't interested in setting up for Rivera

Apparently just a negotiating tactic when he said he'd be interested.

Giles is their main target for centerfield, and Lupica thinks that's ridiculous

And who can blame him, since Giles has played somethnig like 35 games in centerfield in the last four years? He's a great table-setter, still some pop in his bat, but is he an upgrade over Bernie, when he's 35 years old and they're thinking of tossing 33 mil for three years?? That's setting yourself up for Bernie redux.

Pavano can go. He's another Kenny Rogers. Giles would be a mistake. Ryan I can handle. That would take me back to those halcyon days of Rivera setting the table for Wetteland. Bring it on.

Re-read the points, Dave. I doubt there's anyone to take Pavano, not without the Yanks picking up 9 of 10 million. And Ryan might bring back the halycon days, but he's NOT interested in being anyone's set-up man.

I'd say its more likely the Sox give up on Foulke and sign Ryan, but anyway you slice it, if the reports are accurate, Ryan will not be in pinstripes.

Heck, he came to New York this week and spent two days at Shea. No trips to the Stadium though.
