Guest akanalog Posted November 17, 2005 Report Posted November 17, 2005 i saw a joe henderson live disc in tower records that looked kind of grey market. it was maybe just two tracks-one long one from 1973 and a shorter one from 1967. usually i would have just grabbed it, especially from these years, but the long song looked sorta jam-sessioney. gary burton was on it and jimmy owens and larry ridley and i don't remember who else. the other song was with kenny barron and i don't remember who else. anyone know of this disc? sorry i have no other info... bertrand Posted November 17, 2005 Report Posted November 17, 2005 This sounds like the one on Jazz Door. Grey market it is. Bertrand. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted November 17, 2005 Report Posted November 17, 2005 Grey market, for sure. Think I've heard the one long track from '73 (about 35 minutes long, if I remember) -- and if it is the one I heard (and no tellin' 100% that it was), I remember it being pretty good. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted November 17, 2005 Report Posted November 17, 2005 sounds right-it was like 35 minutes... was it jam session-ey or deep or what? Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted November 17, 2005 Report Posted November 17, 2005 I seem to remember it being closer to deep than jam-sessionistic. I've got a burn of something fitting this description (and the time is close to 35 minutes) - so there's a good chance it's the same thing. I'll see if I can find it, and give it a spin. Been over a year since I've heard it - but if I remember right, I was wishing there was more of the same or similar. Quote
JSngry Posted November 17, 2005 Report Posted November 17, 2005 What are the tunes? There's a private tape of Joe doing a loooong version of "Invitation" that is freakin' hypnotic... Quote
Claude Posted November 17, 2005 Report Posted November 17, 2005 This is the disc: Joe Henderson - Sextet & Quartet JazzDoor JD 1267 "In a Modal Way" taken from the Henderson sextet's concert in Belgrade, 1973 and "O Amor Em Paz" from quartet's concert in New York, 1967. 1. In A Modal Way (35:00) 2. O Amor Em Paz (5:32) http://www.tanieplyty.pl/product_info.php?products_id=1538 Henderson's pace of recording had slowed but never stopped in the '70s; some of the albums were larger groups, and 'In A Modal Way', recorded live in Yugoslavia '73, had nine pieces including Cedar Walton, Gary Burton, Kenny Barron noodling on a head arrangement for 35 minutes (issued on a Jazz Door CD '96), a good example of a bunch of post-bop veterans trying to come to terms with transitions in jazz and not sounding very comfortable with it. http://www.musicweb-international.com/ency...aedia/h/H91.HTM Quote
Guest akanalog Posted November 18, 2005 Report Posted November 18, 2005 hmm. so we have some conflicting opinions here.... Quote
md655321 Posted November 18, 2005 Report Posted November 18, 2005 am I the only one who has never heard bad joe henderson? atleast not in his realatively earlier years. id pick it up in a second if the price was reasonable. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted November 18, 2005 Report Posted November 18, 2005 (edited) am I the only one who has never heard bad joe henderson? atleast not in his realatively earlier years.← How about what is probably some good Joe Henderson. (OK, maybe just "OK" Joe Henderson perhaps), but in a bad context?? from 1976: Coke Escovedo - Comin' At Ya <-- click for AMG review, w/ sound-clips. The AMG has sound-clips, and Joe can clearly be heard on two or three clips. Check out tracks 1, 3, and especially the clip of track #9. (I'm at work now, and can't get the clips to play through the firewall here -- but I remember track #9 being the best example of Joe's playing, among the three.) When bad albums happen to good musicians. EDIT: Just checked, and the firewall didn't hold me back. Do check out the clip of track #9 for sure -- by luck it's an entire solo from Joe.
