RIP Sherman Ferguson

Bertrand, RDK, Valerie B, and I attended the Tribute to Sherman Ferguson at Catalina's last Sunday. I arrived late, and missed some things. It was lovely, and the place was full. But there was more speaking than playing. Several people spoke about Ba'hai faith, which Sherman followed. Kenny Burrell gave a moving eulogy. There were a couple of groups that played one number each, but then they ended it promptly at 4:00 so that Catalina's could prepare for the evening show.

They announced that there would be more music & tribute at the World Stage at 7:30 that night in honor of Sherman, but I was not able to attend.

I saw Ferguson a few times over the years in Los Angeles, with various groups, and he was always excellent. He'll be missed. RIP.

hearing sherman's student group perform was very poignant. the group with herman riley and ricky woodard was especially hot as was sherman's original group minus two. carl randall and louis van taylor were incredible, as always.

i was very glad to meet the three guys mentioned above but sorry that there just wasn't time to hang as i had to fly out of the club at 4pm.

it was a packed room, filled with lots of love for a magnificent person. the only part of the program i could have done with less of was the ba'hai stuff. just too much and too long for a short program. the irony was that sherman hardly ever talked about his faith - he just lived it! he was "in your face with love". i believe it was kenny burrell who said that.

So he was a Ba'hai, too (I had a fellow student who was a Ba'hai, and my first congs teacher, Tom Nicholas from Philadelphia, was one, too - one of the biggest temples is only a few miles from where I live) ..... I saw him perform twice: with Eddie Harris in a small club, and Geri Allen's trio only a few years ago. He didn't strike me as very original, but had his drum technique more than together and drove the band along with zest and taste without getting obtrusive. The dedication to his craft could be seen in every limb. He impressed me the most on Kenny Burrell's Muse LPs - some great brushwork. 61 is too young, that's for sure.

R.I.P.
