JSngry Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 Yeah, and he killed Randy. THE BASTARD! Quote
DTMX Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 Was volunteered to work 6AM to 6PM Sunday so I couldn't stay up late. If my rusty VCR did its job, I can watch it during the Superbowl. I gotta go see Prince the next time he comes to ATL. The last time here he played Symphony Hall, a place where the funk is usually thrown down by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Shoulda gone. When I flew up to Minneapolis to see Ornette, I made sure that I was looking out of the window during the descent/ascent to see if I saw any giant purple houses or swimming pools shaped like a 'gluck' or whatever that symbol was. Didn't see any though... Quote
johnagrandy Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 (edited) Keep in mind that he cheated and every time you call him "Prince" you let him get away with cheating one more time. Edited February 5, 2006 by johnagrandy Quote
Guest Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 I know people in Princes neighborhood and he lies to mow his own lawn in a purple robe and one time in the early 90s he invited them over to his place Quote
7/4 Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 I saw the first tune and he was wailin'! Quote
RonF Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 I saw one amazing song. Talk about supercharged! He sure makes it look easy. Quote
7/4 Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 I saw one amazing song. Talk about supercharged! He sure makes it look easy. It was inspired! I wonder what the second tune was like. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 Missed all of it, but I've got it on tape for later viewing tonight probably. Fell asleep less than two sketches after the monologue. Quote
7/4 Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 The second tune was lame, in the limpid modern radio R&B manner. I guess I didn't miss too much. The first one was abso-frigging-lutely inspired. I heard him and I thought "the man is back, for real." Killer hook, positively smoldering guitar. Dig it here. That's it! Quote
md655321 Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 The second tune was indeed very lame. And the first was indeed SMOKIN. It is so obvious and so amazingly refreshing when you see greatness on TV these days. It just highlights how painfully mediocre 99% of popular music is these days. Quote
DukeCity Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 Prince was good, but I thought it was great that Fred Armisen and Maya Rudolf would do "The Prince Show" bit on that show. In '04, when Prince was releasing the "Musicology" album, he kicked off the tour at the LA Staples Center, and had a live video feed to theaters across the country. For $15 a head, my friends and I got a copy of the CD at the door, and a 'live' show. That live band was KILLIN', even with Candy Dulfer playing some alto. Nobody ever said Prince didn't know about markenting... Quote
Guest akanalog Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 how is his instrumental N.E.W.S. album? worth picking up? Quote
Soul Stream Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 Funny, I actually turned the T.V. off midway through his first song. Different strokes for different folks I guess! Quote
Soul Stream Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 I actually just watched the whole first song through the link provided above. I guess my question would be this... Question: What do you get when you cross Greta Garbo's Wardrobe with Tina Turner's backup singers with Steve Vai's guitar licks with bad 80's syth sounds and a generous heaping of posturing? Answer: Prince on SNL. Sorry I know that sounds like being a hater, but I couldn't help it. Hey, I think Prince can handle it, I'm at my computer and he's in bed with his backup singers. Quote

Hey, I think Prince can handle it, I'm at my computer and he's in bed with his backup singers. hehe I've liked some of his stuff over the years, but the majority comes off as over produced, over hyped, pop crap. These days it all seems too dramatic for me. Quote
Big Al Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 The first one was abso-frigging-lutely inspired. I heard him and I thought "the man is back, for real." Killer hook, positively smoldering guitar. My thoughts exactly. Sounded like vintage 80's Prince. A good thing, IMHO. Quote
JSngry Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 I'd like to hear the R&B number as well. Is it up somewhere? I'm not as enamored of Rock Prince as many. He does it superbly, but the thing I dig most about Prince in general is the creative/quirky tricks in the songrwriting/arranging/production/etc, and to my ears, he does much less of that on the rock stuff. But DAMN does he sure find some gorgeous women! Quote
7/4 Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 I was never a fan, but what I heard last night rocked. Quote
John B Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 Check out this version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps from the 2004 R&R Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. He's not visible until almost halfway through the tune, but his solo at the end is amazing. Even better than the SNL clip. Quote
Aggie87 Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 Thanks for that link, John. Wow! That look on Dhani Harrison's face while Prince is soloing is sweet. Quote
johnagrandy Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 That shit was fucking killin' ! There are three rock musicians in history who weren't guitarists per se but who figured how to get everything and more they needed out of the instrument : Jimi, Prince, and Kurt Quote

You know, I was kind of thinking the same thing. I had forgotten just how much the guy had copped Jimi--same mannerisms, similar vocal styles... and then there's that whole splashy, ultra-lush 80's bag. An artist, a great all-'round musician--but man, that cat's vibrato just pisses me off. Quote
