Guest akanalog Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 how are the paul bley 4tet discs on soul note? i think there are two of them (w. scofield/swallow/altschul). very nice discs or mediocre? i think one is called "hot" and one is just "the paul bley quartet". oh also-how is enrico rava's "secrets" on soul note and steve lacy's "the flame" as long as i am asking. is "the flame" straight trio or are the songs broken down into smalle aggregations of the 3 musicians? oh also has anyone heard a marcello melis black saint disc from 78 with a yellow cover and a huge cast of players? title has the word "dance" in it, i think. thank you for any info. JohnS Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 I have 'Hot'. It's an interresting group with Sco, Swallow and Altschul, recorded live in 1985. I've not played it for a while but I recall it being an enjoyable set. Sorry don't have the others. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 oh, it's live...interesting. thanks! Quote
JohnS Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 At the Lush Life in NYC. I'd be playing it now but my pc doesn't want to recognise the disc Quote
Guest akanalog Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 been a lot more BN/SN discs floating around new york lately. i wish j & r would get involved though since they generally have the best prices. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 oh wait. one more question- how is the jarman/moye black saint disc-i think it is callled earth density? w. craig harris and don rafael garrett. Quote
brownie Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 Was not too keen on 'Hot' when I purchased it - I have problems with John Scofield - but I relistened to the disc some time ago and found the whole session quite remarkable! It's not a quartet date but would also recommend 'Notes' a duo date with Paul Motian! As for the Marcello Melis, the full title is 'Free To Dance'. Loved that one right away and it's still among my favorite Black Saints! Quote
Guest akanalog Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 is the mellis a lot of duos and the like or a full band thing? and is it a free blow out or more composed? man, black saint really loved that stencil font! is that the "milton glaser" font? Quote
JohnS Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 Again I've not played the Moye/Jarman for a while, but I'd say it is typical Black Saint fare. Quote
brownie Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 'Free To Dance' is a very structured work that also incorporates free blowing and vocalizing (by Jeanne Lee and Sheila Jordan). Don't shy away from it if you have a chance to get a copy! Even better is Melis previous release on Black Saint 'The New Village on the Left' which incorporates a vocal quartet from Sardinia! Quote
Guest akanalog Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 i like that other mellis album but don't believe it has been on CD yet, has it? Quote
brownie Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 I have those Melis on vinyl. 'New Village' seems to be available on CD: http://www.omnitone.com/store/120012.htm Quote
Guest akanalog Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 pulled a changeup-wanted a BS/SN and ended up with jeff palmer's "abracadabra". sounds good so far.... Quote
Aggie87 Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 I have 'Hot'. It's an interresting group with Sco, Swallow and Altschul, recorded live in 1985. I've not played it for a while but I recall it being an enjoyable set. Sorry don't have the others. I have "Hot" too, and think it's very good. But knowing Akanalog's dislike of Sco, I wouldn't recommend it. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 scofield is aight with miles davis and billy cobham and cobham/duke. i like some of his older stuff ok. i have some live stuff from the 80s w. jim beard which is aight if i am in the mood. i am willing to check him out in different earlier contexts, and playing with bley interests me. as a whole, it sounds like an interesting band on "hot" and i am curious how they would tackle c and p bley compositions. swallow i also dislike sometimes, but contextually he too can be ok. my main problems with scofield start in the 90s. beforehand i find him a decent sideman. i can divorce myself from my current feelings on him to check stuff out on occassion (not past the gramavision era, though) that he is on. i wouldn't pass up a paul bley date, for instance, if i see scofield is on it. clifford_thornton Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 Now I'm curious about those Melis LPs... Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 I really enjoy the Melis. As Brownie says, structured, not a blowout. And what a lineup! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 Agreed, very enticing! Quote
Guest akanalog Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 oops i guess the other bley quartet on soul note i saw was actually a disc with red mitchell and john abercrombie and altschul. weird. that one is from 88 or so and seems more standards-based so i passed. so i guess just "hot' has scofield swallow altschul. Quote
JohnS Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 Don't pass up 'Hot'. there is som every nice playing from Bley 'When will the blue leave' and 'Mazatlan' both get fine performances from Bley. Tried 'Earth Density' today. As you'd expect a swinging number, something more open, a drum and flute piece in the AEOC tradition. If you like the pricipal principal players then I recommend this one. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 Real big on Donald Garrett, so this has potential. I hadn't picked it up for the main reason that some of Jarman's other records from the period - including that trio with Dyani - really don't do it for me. Dyani I usually love as well, but that Black Saint trio record sucks. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 cliffoirde, why do you think the jarman trio album with dyani sucks? i like it. Quote
Swinger Posted February 25, 2006 Report Posted February 25, 2006 The Flame is ok. I don't play it very often but it's enjoyable in its own way. Quote
