montg Posted March 10, 2006 Report Share Posted March 10, 2006 One of my favorite live recordings is the Red Clay bonus track recorded for CTI and released on the 2002 reissue of Red Clay. Something about the era, the energy that really moves me (btw, does anyone have any familiarity with the Southgate Palace in LA, where the Red Clay recording was made in 1971?). Anyway, I'm curious about how much live stuff from the CTI roster in the early 70s (Turrentine, Hubbard etc) is available in one form or another. This one includes versions of Red Clay and Sugar that match the energy of the live versions tacked on to the latest reissues mentioned above. Stanley T was on fire that night! The CD reissue has been out of print for quite some time. Another great live track is "It's Too Late" added to Johnny Hammond Smith's Breakout. I heard this impromptu jam session on the radio years ago and just found it newly released on a Goodman cd under the title "Waiting for Benny" Features Georgie Auld and Charlie Christian jamming away together. I love the studio "Red Clay" ... but the live version is just as good in a different way. The rock 'n funk vibe is pumped-up (Cobham might be key to this). Interesting that Turrentine's funky but simple solo gets more cheering-on than Hub , who was positively smoking ! Though my favorite is "CTI Summer Jazz At The Hollywood Bowl" I am soooo lucky to have been able to buy that in the CD version jlhoots mentioned earlier in the thread. If Sony wanted to they could reissue the California Concert on a 2 disc set, recovering the omitted Leaving West(which could have fit on the original CD) and adding the remaining cuts that are unissued. I'd like to know if there are any unissued tapes from other performances of the '72 CTI All Stars sans the overdubs that are on the "Hollywood Bowl" albums.
