  1. Can you tell me where it is in Manhattan, please??
  2. What happened to Sonny Igoe?
  3. It is truly delightful to find someone who meets with pretty universal approval in this bunch of folks on this bulletin board of folks with such disparate tastes. My favorite Maxine Sullivan record is one she did back in LP days along with Bob Wilbur on soprano sax.
  4. JAZZBO- JUST A NOTE ON MCKINLEY. Your recent post on the McKinley bio reminded me of something. If you ever visit the Antietam battlefield you'll finf that the largest monument on the field is about McKinley. Ir's an obelisk with bas relief sculptures showing McKinly in action during the battle. On one sculpture we find a row of union soldiers hunkered down behind a wall taking aim at the enemy. It also shows McKinley, who was a mess sargeant at the time STANDING next to them pouring coffee for them out of a coffee pot.
  5. I thought I was thte only reader of jazzbeat. Anybody else out there----?
  6. Don't forget Georgia Gibbs who just left us this week
  7. A friend of ours is hunting a cd burner. I have a Denon, but I wouldn't recommend it to him as he's a complete registered and accredited Luddite. Do any of you folks know anything about the SONY RCD-W500 recorder. It seems simple enough for him to operate. Comment??? Anybody recommend something else? Thanks.
  8. Two items. Hal McKusick is well known to a friend of mine. I don't know about antiques, but he is an expert horologist. (Down, boy. It means clockmaker/repairer) and he does live on Eastern Long Island. My other contribution is to list Jeri Southern as someone who quit while very popular, not to mention that so did Lee Wiley. Wiley did come back mjuch later in life to a Carnegie Hall concert and a record date, but she was clearly past her prime then.
  9. That scream in level three scared hell out of me/
  10. Suffolk County being pretty close to Queens (except when driving on the Long Island Expressway) it was just beautiful today, the first true day of spring weather.
  11. I was reminded of the bunch from one of Goodman's sextets who were noodling about together in a recording studio when someone threw the record switch. I heard this impromptu jam session on the radio years ago and just found it newly released on a Goodman cd under the title "Waiting for Benny" Features Georgie Auld and Charlie Christian jamming away together. What could be better?
  12. Strange how that works! For alll the world I couldn't remember the name of that lady harpist who played jazz, forgot about it and went about my business. Then about a half hour later, her first name popped into my head. A few minutes later, it all came back. It's as if while you're doing something else, part of your brain goes about opening dusty file drawers until it finds the answer. The lady's name was Daphne Hellman. She had a home near me on Long Island, and her trio was called Hellman's Angels. Thats all I know, and I didn't know I knew that.
  13. There was a lady jazz harpist who had her own trio and unfortunately died recently. Can't remembere her name, but she was the subject of an article by Whitney Balliett, if you wish to look her up. I'm unable to remember whether or not the 50's sauter Finegan band had a harpist, but you might check that out too.
  14. About this topic. Do you remember the scene in the Billie Holiday movie when she was so angry and fristrated at a guy that she began spluttering at him, unable to find the words to express her exasparation, andd finally she screamed "You,-----You------You---- DENTIST'
  15. As the old joke has it---he picked the ugliest one in the herd.
  16. To Larry Kart----Can you conceive that it is possible to indulge YOUR taste in jazz, without denigrating as "inane" the taste of others?
  17. I agree completely about not copying stuff from a company like Mosaic that is doing what virtually noone else is doing to make this stuff available. I have absolutely no compunction about doing it for material that is out of print and nowhere available.
  18. If you want to hear a memorable never to be forgotten version of "Three cerns in da fountain" you should hunt up Wingy Manones old record.
  19. On Long Island---coldest of the season I believe.
  20. Farrell------His best work was the "Siege of Krishnapur" IMHO. How he could make such humor out of all that blood is forever beyond me. Let us know how the newer Farrell is. Haven't yet read it. Do you know how Farrel died. Strange that!
  21. For the first time, oneof my credit cards was compromised. Many kudos to the people at the card company who picked it up and called me. My wife and I still had our cards, which had never left us. They killed the old card and issued us new ones. Picked up local paper and found that it is a countywide problem on eastern Long Island. Watch it out there, guys.
  22. NASA gets into the global warming flap through the dismissal of a PR man who tried to moderate the announcements of a top level NASA climatologist. The guy, named Deutsch, it seems was a political appointee of Bush, who had been a worker in his election campaign. They discovered that he had claimed to have a degree, when he had no such of a thing. Deutsch made a statement tother day saying "It's a culture war issue. They" (NASA I guess)" don't like Republicans. They do not like people who support the president. They do not like Christians...... and if are perceived as disagreeing with them, they will stop at nothing to discredit you."

  24. I don't have great deal of Basie either, but my recommendation is be sure to include "Tickle Toe" in your purchases. It is I believe on a disc of his entitled "Atomic Basie" . If I were on the hunt, I'd go to itunes or Amazon for their 1 minute (about) samples. Enjoy/
