Duke Ellington Carnegie Hall Concert Jan 1943

I can't tell much difference--but either the LP or the CD are good enough to be considered listenable, and this is a great concert.

My favorite part was always the sequence on side 2 of the LP, where Ellington says, "And now our Portraits," leading into Portrait of Bert Williams, Portrait of Bojangles, Portrait of Florence Mills, then onto a great version of Koko, and then on to two Strayhorn pieces, "Dirge," which is the bleakest piece of music I've ever heard, and another great Johnny Come Lately.

Of course, side 5 of the old LP set, with Bakiff, Jack the Bear, Cotton Tail and Day Dream, I like almost as much.
