Guest akanalog Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 anyone else appreciate chico hamilton's "nomad"? it isn't a good album but for smooth jazz, it's not bad. it is really laid back-the drumming is surprisingly tame. i don't know who this "kimbo" is on guitar, but he or she has a really pure and interesting kind of tone that gives this album some originality. again, not a good one-but for people who were around in the 80s, was this an album they put on when kicking back ever? there are some weird synth sounds and subtle exchanges between guitar and keys that-no i mean this is a lame album but something about it.... JSngry Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 Great "wallpaper" music, and I mean that as a compliment. Wallpaper can be esthetically uplifting, dig? But I'd never lump it in with "smooth jazz". Never. It's not music you listen to so much as you listen at. I remember hearing it playing in a record store the week it was released and just going into a zone while it played. Then I took it home, "listened" to it, got pissed, and took it back, But I re-bought it a few years ago, and totally dig the sound that it makes in the room when it plays. Sometimes it takes a while to learn about the different levels of music's "functions", and such was the case with this one for me. Chico's made a lot of records like that, especially in the 70s. But I find that once I figure out just what the hell he was trying to do with'em, I end up digging almost all of them. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 31, 2006 Report Posted March 31, 2006 (edited) I've never bought any of the Impulse sides, but have been curious about them. There's probably a thread somewhere around here that would be helpful... Edit: Yeah, I know these are earlier than the thread-starter, but whatever. Edited March 31, 2006 by clifford_thornton Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 1, 2006 Report Posted April 1, 2006 Much better "background music" out there. Quote
JSngry Posted April 1, 2006 Report Posted April 1, 2006 Indeed. That's why I called it "wallpaper music". Perhaps too fine a distinction to bother with, I know, but my house has both wallpapered and sheetrocked walls, so I'm kinda squirrely about it. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 1, 2006 Report Posted April 1, 2006 Ditch the avatar Jim. It's bugging me. Quote
