lous hayes-variety is the spice of life

fumio karashima-hot islands

barney wilen-autojazz

rufus harley-re creation of the gods

most are japanese import prices so figured i would ask before wasting 20 something bucks a disc.

thank you.

yeah i read about the wilen and it sounds interesting and i like the cover art a lot.

so is the music obscured by the race recordings to the degree it is almost secondary?

The Rufus Harley side is a real trip, but only if you dig Rufus Harley's whole trip. It's not at all like his old Atlantic sides, there's a much more modal vibe going on, and there's a lot of overt "spiritual" (in both the commonly understood & the dusty groove senses :) ) goings on.

Definitely not for everybody, but I dug it.

I like that Louis Hayes album a lot, too. It's probably a little more "commersh" than you're used to hearing from him, but it works. But with Leon Thomas, Frank Strozier, Harold Mabern and Cecil McBee, you know there's some value.

FWIW, this version of "My Favorite Things" burns down the HOUSE! Mabern's on fire.

No, the race recordings don't obscure the jazz in "Autojazz" to me. . . they weave around and through and color it. Interesting recording, but I'm not really sure you'll be happy spending the money on it.

It's a nice enough album, but to me it has always been less than the sum of its parts, and I wouldn't pay import $ for it.
