robviti Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 there's a used copy for sale at amazon marketplace. only $24.71. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 I have the Bird stuff on an Alamac lp and used to have the rest on a dandy IAJRC record. Never bought the cd. Sorry I can't help. Quote
kh1958 Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 I have the CD, and it's terrific. I learned about it through a Gary Giddens piece in the Village Voice. The Bird part sounds alot better on this CD than on the Alamac LP. If this helps, the label is Jass Records (J-CD-16), 611 Broadway, #411, New York, 10012, 1-800-666-JASS. The producer is Dr. William Miner. Engineering was by Doug Pomeroy and Jerry Valburn. The other interesting release on this label (which I don't have) is Count Basie, Lester Young and the Stars of Birdland on Tour. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 23, 2006 Report Posted July 23, 2006 I think the Alamac sounds terrific. Quote
Stereojack Posted July 23, 2006 Report Posted July 23, 2006 The Bird part sounds a lot better on this CD than on the Alamac LP. The producer is Dr. William Miner. Engineering was by Doug Pomeroy and Jerry Valburn. A matter of opinion. Producer Bill Miner told me that the CD was dubbed from the Alamac LP. And I agree with Chuck - the Alamac is fine, and IMO one of the great unsung Bird records. Quote
kh1958 Posted July 23, 2006 Report Posted July 23, 2006 You must have a better copy than me--the Alamac pressings I have are terrible. Quote
Stereojack Posted July 23, 2006 Report Posted July 23, 2006 You must have a better copy than me--the Alamac pressings I have are terrible. Most of the Alamacs do suck, I agree. But the Bird Carnegie Hall has very good sound, I think. Quote
JSngry Posted July 23, 2006 Report Posted July 23, 2006 My Alamac's just fine too. That was a fun label. Who was behind it? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 23, 2006 Report Posted July 23, 2006 My Alamac's just fine too. That was a fun label. Who was behind it? Frank Driggs and some "bad" money. Quote
JSngry Posted July 23, 2006 Report Posted July 23, 2006 Thanks. Was either he or the same "bad" money behind the ALA label that followed immediately thereafter, the one that reissued all the Charlie Parker label stuff? Quote
marcello Posted July 23, 2006 Report Posted July 23, 2006 The Bud Powell on that is terrific! He's in top form. More so than Bird, IMHO. Quote
