scottb Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 I just upgraded to the 24 bit remaster of this via yourmusic.com and hats off to Verve for a GREAT reissue! Sound upgrade is terrific and the SIX bonus tracks bring the disc from 5 to 11 tracks! I'm not a fan of Verve's packaging and artwork but at least they got the important stuff right. Quote

ep1str0phy Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 I dunno--I've been more impressed by the Paris material I've heard (slightly 'rougher' in approach) than the Half Note sides. There's no doubt that the HN material is consummately played--and these are top notch musicians--but there are times when the improvisations feel just a little too logical, the lines a little too finely hewn (bordering, at worst, on facile). Next to the HN sides, Paris feels like a tightrope walk--hard, imperfect, and risky. I think Wes is at his best when he starts to think outside of his time-worn--if virtuosic--patterns (e.g., 'Impressions'--geez! Nice when the changes are a little more oblique...). Quote

The live bonus tracks on this release are soundboard tapes of live remote stereo FM Radio broadcast. They were not engineered by Van Gelder like the original album studio/live tracks. That is why the bonus tracks sound a bit different and survive in varying degrees of fidelity and also feature a radio announcer. Quote
