scottb Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 Before I really got into jazz I listened to a lot of blues. Basically I got tired of listening to trite lyrics waiting for a guitar / harmonica solo. Lately I've been listening to more blues since I made a compilation disc for a blues themed party at work. (I also performed a blues number written about a coworker which was a big hit with the staff) Since I've been out of the scene lately, are their any new blues acts that I MUST hear? I guess my favorite modern blues group was Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets. I love that Texas guitar, Chicago harp combo. (RIP Sam Myers) Quote

I guess my favorite modern blues group was Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets. I love that Texas guitar, Chicago harp combo. (RIP Sam Myers) I have a hard time finding current blues artists that appeal to me. The most interesting "new" blues artist that I've discovered recently is Otis Taylor. He writes interesting, powerful songs, has a distinctive sound, and melds together country and electric blues. I recommend all of his recordings (including White African, Double V, Truth is Not Fiction, When Negroes Walked the Earth, Respect the Dead and Below the Fold). Quote
Bluesman Posted August 3, 2006 Report Posted August 3, 2006 (edited) Duke Robillard is not exactly new but is still making great records. Try "Guitar Groove-a-Rama", excellent mix of jazz and blues. Edited August 3, 2006 by Bluesman Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted August 3, 2006 Report Posted August 3, 2006 I got James "Blood" Ullmer's "Blue blood" album a few months ago. I like it very much indeed - he is taking Blues to somewhat other places, as he took his jazz. I expect to get some more of his Blues material. MG Quote
paul secor Posted August 3, 2006 Report Posted August 3, 2006 Unfortunately, there are no new blues acts that anyone must hear. Quote
kh1958 Posted August 3, 2006 Report Posted August 3, 2006 Maybe not "new" technically speaking, but among younger blues musicians, I really like these three. Little Jimmy King--Unfortunately he died a few years ago in his 30s, but he was an excellent guitarist who played with Albert King at the end of his life, and he's a fine singer. I recommend, Little Jimmy King and the Memphis Soul Survivors, Something Inside of Me, and Live at Monterey. Lucky Peterson--He's quite good on guitar, organ and vocals. He used to appear around Dallas fairly regularly. A very charismatic performer. His albums are a mixed bag; all will have at least a few good tracks. I recommend Black Midnight Sun as perhaps the best. Melvin Taylor--He's a stunning guitar virtuoso who plays weekly at Rosa's in Chicago. I caught him once in New York, and he's dazzling. All of his recordings on Evidence are worthwhile. Quote
John L Posted August 3, 2006 Report Posted August 3, 2006 Unfortunately, there are no new blues acts that anyone must hear. I pretty much agree. But there are still quite a number of older blues artists who still deliver the all the goods. Magic Slim keeps the Southside Chicago stuff very much alive. Quite a number of artists still play top notch Chicago Westside stuff: Jimmy Johnson, Eddie Campbell, John Primer to name a few. Soul blues is still very much alive: Otis Clay, Bobby Bland (although his voice is getting very weak), Solomon Burke, etc. On the other hand, Lucky Peterson does nothing for me. Quote

Dan Gould Posted August 4, 2006 Report Posted August 4, 2006 Among younger artists, I continue to enjoy Ronnie Earl, and if you like a mix of blues with jazz (similar to Earl) you may check out Dave Specter's Delmark CDs. He's recorded with Eric Alexander and Jack McDuff. Quote
Jim R Posted August 4, 2006 Report Posted August 4, 2006 Definitely not "new", but there may yet be a lot of folks (moreso out east) who are not yet hip to... Charlie Baty is one of the few guitar players on the planet who is as versatile and accomplished in blues and swing as the aforementioned Mr. Robillard. I've always preferred Charlie- he's more fiery and unpredictable (been listening to him for 25 years, and he rarely repeats himself), and he doesn't waste any time with vocals. He leaves that to Rick Estrin. Not that Duke is a bad singer, but... Quote

chris olivarez Posted August 6, 2006 Report Posted August 6, 2006 (edited) Anyone got the blues? Yes. I'm thinking of you . I want to respond to the thread you started but I'm still sorting through my thoughts. At the time of my divorce I had been listening to a lot of jazz but the divorce got me back into the blues. Albert Collins and the Fabulous T Birds helped a lot. Edited August 6, 2006 by chris olivarez Quote

Ed S Posted August 6, 2006 Report Posted August 6, 2006 I've been listening to a ton of blues lately. It's funny, but like Chris, my blues listening has increased with my divorce. It's been a nice positive, too. I'm guessing that hardcore blues fans mught snicker at my idea of blues, or at least some of my current favs. I'm really digging Derek Trucks, Robert Cray, Tab Benoit, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughan,Allman Brothers. I've used my yourmusic.com membership to pick up a stuff by Paul Butterfied, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Jimmy Vaughan, John Mayall and a few others. Heard a lot of blues at the Montreal Jazz Festival. August 15th, going to hear the Fabulous Thunderbirds at a free show and tickets for a late September Robert Cray appearance go on sale tomorrow. Saw him last November and he was excellent. Dam right I got the BLues..... Quote
