robertoart Posted September 15, 2006 Report Posted September 15, 2006 Just seen a copy of this one. I am blown away by Jimmy Ponders playing on 'Grass Roots' and John Patton's 'That Certain Feeling'. Does Jimmy have as much room to move on this one as well. Any thoughts on this session? Quote

I remember it as a nice date in a late 60s way, but don't recall how much space Ponder has. Quote

FWIW, I think Ponder's playing on the extra "Grass Roots" session, and "That Certain Feeling" (which I only heard for the first time less than a year ago), are tops among my all-time favorite 60's recordings with guitar. The Magnificent Goldberg Posted September 15, 2006 Report Posted September 15, 2006 I haven't specifically checked, but I recall that Ponder gets in some decent solos on "Lonely Avenue" - particularly good - "Buster Brown" and "Boogaloo" - both well up to his usual standard. MG Quote
Soul Stream Posted September 15, 2006 Report Posted September 15, 2006 One of my all time favorite 60's funk/boogaloo outings. They swing the hell out of "Blowin' In The Wind"...and that ain't easy! Quote
mailman Posted September 15, 2006 Report Posted September 15, 2006 Ponder has some nice solo space on this outing. Overall this date is nice but hardly essential. I've got it on LP but haven't played it in quite a while. If you can pick it up at a reasonable price i'd say get it but don't be emptying your wallet for this one. Unless of course you're a Ponder completest. Then reason goes out the window. Quote
JSngry Posted September 16, 2006 Report Posted September 16, 2006 Overall this date is nice but hardly essential. Pretty much how I feel about it. A lot of the material just ain't too happening. True, it all swings, but that crew could play "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" and make it groove like a mofo, so... Quote
Soul Stream Posted September 16, 2006 Report Posted September 16, 2006 I guess I'm the odd man out on this. I find this to be one of my favorite 60's organ sides. Bob Cranshaw and Idris Muhammed really lock in on this and the Shirley/Stan thing is really relaxed and happening imho. Plus, I really like how this session sounds. Nice job by RVG cutting the tracks. Quote

Yes!!!! What a shame he didn't get the amount of session time his playing so obviously deserved during these years. I remember reading an older thread that mentioned the missed opportunity of Ponder not recording with Larry Young, and can only reiterate those sentiments. I too only got to hear 'That Certain Feeling' for the first time this year and still can't believe these tunes were written during the session. I think it makes a great companion piece to the extra Grass Roots session as well. Thanks for the thoughts everyone regarding Common Touch. It's going for a song and found where I least expected it. In fact they've got two copies. Quote

He wasn't on the Grassella Oliphant album of that name. MG Quote

Ponder is playing there, alongside Woody Shaw, Frank Mitchell, Reggie Workman, Idris Muhammad and of course, Andrew Hill. A very good session! Quote

I am a bit of a Ponder completist, I think. Though I had "Lift every voice" by Hill once and didn't get along with it at all. Still, Frank Mitchell and Idris as well... MG Quote
Soul Stream Posted September 16, 2006 Report Posted September 16, 2006 I really dig Ponder's playing on Lou Donaldson's "Mr. Shing-A-Ling" as well. Check him out on that, you'll dig it. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 16, 2006 Report Posted September 16, 2006 Amen. He really shines on that one. Quote

Proper stuff. That was either Ponder's first recording or the first time I'd heard him. Well, it WAS the first time I'd heard him. He made a bigger impact than the first time I heard Eric Gale - on "The burner" by Red Holloway - and that was quite an album. MG Quote
