Just got it in the mail & looking forward to reading it later today. Is it true that his most recent CD is already OOP? That's what the owner of Landlocked Music here in town told me... going to have to pluck a copy online somewhere.

Is Exploration his latest Cd? It's certainly still here on the Capri website.

It's certainly his most recent release. I've heard from a friend, who's friends with the owner of Capri Records -- that supposedly there's a whole 'nother album of Moncur tunes, also recorded by nearly the same group as Exploration.

I wouldn't say I have that on good authority, but that's what I've heard -- take it for what it's worth.

Not sure how to take it that 'Exploration' went OOP. Would be interesting to hear it sold out but have to doubt this.

In any case, 'Exploration' is a very interesting achievement by Moncur and the musicians involved!

Jason (owner of Landlocked) is usually on top of things, esp. avant-jazz (strong interest of his), but I think it may just be a problem with his distributors. He told me it was OOP a few months ago when I tried to order it through him, based on his efforts to get a copy for in-store sale. I know jazz titles can go OOP fairly fast, in the grand scheme of things, but EXPLORATION seemed a bit too recent to already be unavailable. I try to give my business to his store whenever possible, but looks like I will have to go the online route for this one.

Exploration is most likely not OOP, just hard to get due to limited distribution.

I liked it so much, I contacted Mark Masters to tell him about the copyright project I am doing at the Library of Congress. To make a long story short, I flew out to LA in late January for a concert Mark put together with an octet performing Lee Morgan tunes, including one unrecorded piece that I found. I also was interviewed on video about my Lee Morgan research for their oral history - their previous interviewees were people like Grachan, Dewey Redman, Sam Rivers, Lee Konitz etc. I can't tell you how nervous I was, but I think it went OK.

Mark is a fabulous arranger - check out his CDs with Jimmy Knepper, Billy Harper, Lee Konitz etc.

On a sad note, Mark was supposed to record Dewey Redman in a big band setting this week-end. Oliver Lake has agreed to step in, so this will be a tribute to Dewey. Mark said the rehearsals went great - I'll keep you guys posted when it comes out.

I don't know if there was a whole other CD with Grachan, but I think there are a few out-takes. I'll ask Mark later.

Thanks to Rooster for first hipping us to Exploration - he made it all happen!

Bertrand.
