The Magnificent Goldberg Posted October 29, 2006 Report Posted October 29, 2006 Haven't really been a big fan of Pete Turner for 25 years or so but may pick this up for the right price.....Anyone have it??? Mark~ I think he was a pretty good photographer, for aught that I know, but his photographs all too often didn't match well with the music in the albums (rarely a problem with BN or Atlantic). I don't know whether Creed Taylor specified the kind of photo he wanted, if he just gave Turner a title or if Turner just produced a few snaps every so often and Taylor picked one. Very often it seems the latter. MG Quote

That said, Pete is a great photographer, just not sure they (all) match up well with the music. Mark~ Quote
marcello Posted October 29, 2006 Report Posted October 29, 2006 Pete Turner is a Rochester Insitute of Technology alumnus, grew up in Rochester, and spent his early years hanging out in the clubs. Quote
sheldonm Posted October 29, 2006 Author Report Posted October 29, 2006 I do like that image and the one on Oliver Nelson's Blues and the Abstract Truth....! Mark~ Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted October 29, 2006 Report Posted October 29, 2006 Some of his sleeves are really splendid. When he hits, he really hits. Wes Montgomery - A day in the life & Road song Stanley Turrentine - Sugar & Don't mess with Mr T Jimmy Ponder - All things beautiful (better than the album) MG Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted October 30, 2006 Report Posted October 30, 2006 I think you folks are forgetting the art directors. Much of the praise/blame belongs to them. Quote

sidewinder Posted March 31, 2007 Report Posted March 31, 2007 (edited) This book looks really good - skimmed through a copy in a shop recently. Nice big tome and lots of the classics including the Farrell, Benson and Turrentine CTIs. I'm tempted. Edited March 31, 2007 by sidewinder Quote
Big Al Posted March 31, 2007 Report Posted March 31, 2007 (edited) I love Pete Turner's photos. But SUGAR absolutely grosses/creeps me out. So much so that when I got the CD, I reversed the booklet so that the pciture facing out is of the woman's face. Edited March 31, 2007 by Big Al Quote
zen archer Posted March 31, 2007 Report Posted March 31, 2007 A friend gave me this book as a gift. As a photographer my friends and i use to love looking at Turner's photographs back in the late 70's early 80's . There use to be a book called American Showcase , which was really a big promo book for art director's to find photographers. We loved Turners commercial work , not really these pic's. Now that I'am a pro i can see that really a lot of these are just Gel's and darkroom techniques. Really if you take away alot of the gels the shot's are pretty straight forward and at times mundane . If you look at the Deodato prelude cover with the shadow of the tree up against a brick wall all he did was put a green tint over it and some masking tape on the bottom to create a better edge for a shadow . On the page before he show's the original shot ( without gel )...he tell's in the book that now he likes the original shot better, BUT really it's nothing special, Damn art students do these kinda photo's in their first 2 week's of class. It's still a nice book , especially for me to look thru and hear about all his little tricks and techniques. BUT Walker Evans he is not ! Quote
