That's all.

Reminds me of the story about the guys hanging out in the prison yard. They'd all been there so long that they didn't even have to tell the jokes anymore, they just numbered them. Spike says, "38." and everyone starts to chuckle. Ace says, "63" and gets a good laugh from the guys. Bruno says, "97" and the place goes nuts. Then Dave says, "14" .... nothing. Spike leans over to Ace, "Some guys just don't know how to tell a joke."

Newer rule: They've gotta be 78s or they don't count.

But if you have any of the three Blue Note 78s that were released in stereo, we'll count those. And if you have all three we'll count them as 4!

But - if you have stereo copies with mono labels, they count as -137 each.

Manlaw?

I have been a faithful member of the BN Church from the day I was converted when I purchased my first album (The Amazing Bud Powell, vol. 1) back in the late '50s.

I have remained faithful through the Lion/Wolff BN/UA/Liberty era! I have turned away since :(

I have all of these albums with the exception of that damn Urbie Green 10incher that has eluded the various searches I have made!

Most treasured items are those early vinyls with the Lexington adresses. Beautiful sounding and looking albums that have withstood the test of time after multiple playings!

You can't, you just CAN NOT have Reuben Wilson's "Set us free". No serious lover of BN has that album!

I have at least one copy of every 12" release--if available in both mono and stereo, I have both versions about 80% of said titles. These are all original pressings and most are first pressings.

I have about half of the 10" releases--I got into the game way late on the 10" LPs and have slowly been trying to build that collection over the past 7-10 years. It's been slow and painfully expensive.

That's why i'm not a BN completist. Actually, i sold most of my stereos and got rid of most of the VG+ (exept when heavy Lex or 47w). Now I just try to score some favourite albums just like other labels. And it's been two years since i have not bought any heavy BN album, because i'm very picky, and the prices for NM/VG++ have put me out of the market : i simply can't afford it. I eventually got tired of this BN hysteria (i've been into that for too long !) and i think there are many interesting records from other companies (Riverside, Savoy, Prestige, Epic, Argo, to name a few), still affordable, and as hip as Blue Note. I'm tired to read averywhere about the rarity of Blue Note, and to see 4 or 5 copies of "Blowing in From Chicago" or "Star Bright" for sale in one month on Ebay.

... i think just to buy those blue note titles for an investment for the future will make you not that happy, but if you buy the ones which you ALSO like to listen to, then it is pretty good feelin.

but of course you are right, there a lots of other great jazz records from other labels, which are sometimes even better than blue note recordings

yesterday night dizzy reece blues in trinity vinyl was sold for 765 $ on ebay. it was near mint. no chance - empty trousers still from the soul station deal

Moreover, i'd say that paying 1 or 2 k for a NM Blue Note is NOT an investment. It has been said here that the last bidder (the winner) is in fact the only one who whiches to pay this price. In other words, as Mr Keynes stated it, trees will never reach the sky. Something that has gone so high cannot keep on eternally, even with the supply and demand rule. I would be really happy if prices were going down : my own collection would decreasse in value, but i could afford more - that what is the most important. Now thtat you have a 765 $ bid on Dizzy Reece, see how many copies of this record will pop up on Ebay in the next weeks....Meanwhile, i'm still looking for a NM copy of South American Cookin' (Curtis Fuller, Epic) that rarely pops up on Ebay..

that is not only the point how often - it is its condition ! the record yesterday was play graded M- !! the last 3 years NO dizzy reece blues in trinity vinyl has shown up in that condition !

... and that is what will count in the future to get high prices.(beside its orig pressing)

same with old cars and oldtimers - you can find lots of them but very little in near perfect condition !

in 3 years you will get for that record 900 $ - i promise you !

actually in an ebay auction, the winner pays the highest price any of the other bidders wanted to pay so there is at least one more bidder who'd have payed that price... :) (but i do agree with your first assertion and like the Keynes quote)

I think France was no bad some years ago, to find premium quality Blue Note. The most precious of my Blue Notes have been found near (or not too far from) my home, in fact. It is thrill to pick out a Mint Lee Morgan 1541 lex DG and to hear the (incompetent) seller says : "20 € ! " I used to have good relationship with some dealers and collectors, before the Japanese buyers invasion. Now i can hardly enter into their record shops...And i certainly ho longer have access to their finest records. :beee:

I only have seven genuine, Alfred Lion era original Blue Note LPs:

Sidney Bechet, vol. 1 and vol. 2

The Fabulous Sidney Bechet

Hank Mobley--Workout

Dexter Gordon--A Swingin' Affair

George Braith--Two Souls in One

Big John Patton--Got a Good Thing Goin'

I have quite a few more Liberty era LPs, a few Japanese reissues, and lots of the dreaded DMM reissues.

I bought basically every BN cds I could find in the last fifteen years. (new, used, you name it) Now I am buying the original BN vinyl I really love and listen to, plus some records never reissue on cd. I don't know the exact number, but it costs me a lot of money. At the same time I get so much pleasure to listen to them, and tomorrow my wife and sons will put them on eBay when I will be gone. So, what's the problem?
