robviti Posted November 20, 2006 Report Posted November 20, 2006 i turn 50 on january 1st. i want to celebrate half a century of living and over 30 years of loving jazz by going to see some live music. trouble is, there's no decent jazz on new year's eve in boston. in fact, it looks like there's an unwritten rule that the only jazz you can see in most venues is dixieland, vocalists, and (gulp) smooth cross-over crap. so i look to the obvious choice: new york city, where smoke is featuring one for all. here's my dilemma: i have family commitments on the 30th and in the evening of the 1st. also, i don't want to pay a ridiculous amount of money for a hotel room on new year's eve. so here's my plan: fly to nyc in the afternoon of the 31st. see two sets of one for all, then take the 6:25am flight back to boston. sleep for several hours, then go to my brother's for my birthday dinner. so what do you say? crazy? remember, i ain't 21 anymore. 7/4 Posted November 20, 2006 Report Posted November 20, 2006 Don't they have trains? Yep! You wouldn't have to deal with getting to and from the airport. Quote
robviti Posted November 20, 2006 Author Report Posted November 20, 2006 (edited) yes, but it takes four hours to get there by train and costs $160. it takes an hour by air and costs only $130. Edited November 20, 2006 by jazzshrink Quote
Guy Berger Posted November 20, 2006 Report Posted November 20, 2006 Don't they have trains? It's not clear to me when the last train to Boston is leaving from Penn Station -- jazzzshrink said he will be catching the late set of a performance, which sometimes ends at 12:30 AM. Guy Quote

jazzbo Posted November 20, 2006 Report Posted November 20, 2006 Do it! It may hurt for a few days after. . . but it will be worth it. So sayeth fifty one year old me. Quote
kh1958 Posted November 20, 2006 Report Posted November 20, 2006 You sound normal to me. It's all those other people who would rather go to a bar than to the Village Vanguard who are nuts. Quote
JSngry Posted November 20, 2006 Report Posted November 20, 2006 Hey, I'm still doing weekend road-trip gigs involving driving anywhere from 4-8 hours each way with only a few hours left for some cheap sleep before going back in to work on Sunday nights, and I'll be 51 here pretty soon. My advice is to go for it, because you're going to be dead eventually anyway. You can sleep then. Quote
robviti Posted November 21, 2006 Author Report Posted November 21, 2006 thanks for the input guys. i'm going to do it, and i'll raise a brew to salute my jazz buddies while i'm there. btw, you're all invited to my colonoscopy party later this year! Quote
Larry Kart Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 btw, you're all invited to my colonoscopy party later this year! A veteran jazz critic who shall be nameless told me that each time he's gone for a colonoscopy he's checked in at the front desk of the gastro unit with the words, "I'm here to get high." Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted November 21, 2006 Report Posted November 21, 2006 Well, I got one for all you... if he's not crazy for planning to do this, am I crazy for going with him? God, we're gonna be wrecked the next day. I don't care how old you are, you gotta get sleep. But it'll be worth it for this special night. I remember pulling regular all-nighters in college. How did I do that? Quote

Gee thanks that colonoscopy party is something I"m really looking forwar to. On your birthday party you're making the right decision. You may bounce back slow but you'll bounce back. Hell you only go around once-go for it!!! Quote
