I am trying to defragment my hard drive. However, I am running into trouble because of the following:

Ensure that your disk has at least 15% free space

A volume must have at least 15% free space for Disk Defragmenter to completely and adequately defragment it. Disk Defragmenter uses this space as a sorting area for file fragments. If a volume has less than 15% free space, Disk Defragmenter will only partially defragment it. To increase the free space on a volume, delete unneeded files or move them to another disk.

Is there any way to get around this without clearing space on my hard drive? My cd burner is very unreliable right now and I can't easily clear that 15%.

You could try compressing things you don't use often into ZIP files, then decompressing when you are done defragmenting.

Or, if you have a fast connection you might try using an Internet storage option. An old family friend runs this startup, which allows you to dump as much as you want remotely. Your data is held ultimately on Amazon's machines as the service uses their s3 architecture to do it.

Wheel,

Thanks -- this looks like what I am looking for.

Make sure you have no background software operations running, like virus guards, screensavers etc. - they will cause the defragmentation to start all over again. I you haven't done it in a long time it may not be easy at first and take verrrrry long.

It also may be necessary to run Scandisk before the process - but Windows usually prompts you to do so.

It is recommended to run it at least once a month - and a registry cleanup software may also be appropriate, if you install and uninstall software frequently.
