BruceH Posted January 20, 2007 Report Posted January 20, 2007 My first Mosaic Single! Who has it already? Reactions? Quote
JSngry Posted January 20, 2007 Report Posted January 20, 2007 Prime smaller-scale Ellingtonia. You should love it. If you don't, you're wrong. Quote
Claude Posted January 20, 2007 Report Posted January 20, 2007 I have it. It's a very good session, but not really essential, given the amount of Ellington material from that time that is already available on Sony. The sound is superb. Quote
Quincy Posted January 20, 2007 Report Posted January 20, 2007 Shocking but oh so true - you can enjoy Ellington without the presence of Johnny Hodges. Yet another marvelous session. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 20, 2007 Report Posted January 20, 2007 (edited) I preordered it and have been enjoying it. I've had the mono lp longer, stunningly remastered by Robert Shawn Dudley (it's an "RSD Edition") to cdr. I really have always liked this session and recommend it. Chuck Nessa Posted January 21, 2007 Report Posted January 21, 2007 Got the mono lp while in school (40+ years ago) and still have it. A fine example of "reduced" Ellington in the '50s/'60s era. Quote
jlhoots Posted January 21, 2007 Report Posted January 21, 2007 I like it too. FWIW, 5 stars in Down Beat, reviewed as I recall by Kevin Whitehead. Quote
BruceH Posted January 21, 2007 Author Report Posted January 21, 2007 Lookin' forward to it! (Thanks for the comments.) Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 I like it too. FWIW, 5 stars in Down Beat, reviewed as I recall by Kevin Whitehead. The original DB review (by Martin Williams) was 3 stars. Fair review considering the time. Quote

I just wanted to add "perspective". Quote
BruceH Posted January 25, 2007 Author Report Posted January 25, 2007 Just got it yesterday. I love it! I give it 4 stars. I've always dug the Ellington small goups, though perhaps this should be called a "medium group" with 9 pieces. The term "nonet" doesn't get enough chance to be uttered. (BTW, I think a ten-piece band should be called a "dectet" not a "tentet.") Quote
Alexander Posted January 26, 2007 Report Posted January 26, 2007 I love this disc. The version of "Body and Soul" is a standout. Quote
BruceH Posted January 27, 2007 Author Report Posted January 27, 2007 The version of "Body and Soul" is a standout. I agree. Quote
JSngry Posted January 27, 2007 Report Posted January 27, 2007 The version of "Body and Soul" is a standout. I agree. As do I. but don't miss the one on Quote
BruceH Posted January 29, 2007 Author Report Posted January 29, 2007 The Cosmic Scene also has a nice "Early Autumn" too. Actually, the whole album is pretty great. Quote
Kalo Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 The version of "Body and Soul" is a standout. I agree. As do I. but don't miss the one on YES! I'm glad you like the Cosmic Scene, BruceH. It was my first Mosaic Single, too. Four stars is a fair review, I'd say. Quote
Kalo Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 Another nice Gonsalves traversal of "Body and Soul" is the one on John Lewis's Atlantic session "The Wonderful World of Jazz." Terrible title for an excellent record. Quote
