Peter Posted January 31, 2007 Report Posted January 31, 2007 The Lennie Tristano box put out by Poper has been calling me, but so far I've not pulled the trigger. Anybody heard it? Your thoughts? Thanks. Quote
Clunky Posted January 31, 2007 Report Posted January 31, 2007 (edited) I already had Cds of the Capitol and Keynote sessions when I picked this up shortly after its release. The music is excellent, I believe some of the sessions are incomplete, the format of the Cds and booklet drives me nuts but it's very cheap. Sound quality is highly variable as were the original releases (I believe, but I've not done an AB comparison). It's not bad overall but I be happier if I had licenced original CDs of more of the material. Edited January 31, 2007 by Clunky Quote
Cliff Englewood Posted January 31, 2007 Report Posted January 31, 2007 (edited) I picked this up last year for €20 and got it mainly because it has some live stuff with Marsh and Konitz. I haven't even listened to the first 2 discs yet, It's a really good way to get a lot of stuff that would otherwise be really hard to find. Obviously the label is a bit dodgy morals wise and I think the sound is pretty much as good as your gonna get, for the majority of these recordings anyway. Make sure you get the "Intuition" CD on Capitol first though. Edited January 31, 2007 by Cliff Englewood Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted January 31, 2007 Report Posted January 31, 2007 Just want to point out the live material is being sold by the Tristano family/friends operation called Jazz Records. Their issues are the unpaid source for the Proper box. Quote

felser Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 Your thoughts? Do the right thing. But decide what that is first. Proper is doing absolutely nothing that the laws of their country prohibit. We've been through this so many times in so many threads lately. The box is an excellent value, but I find the later Atlantic recordings more to my liking. Quote

By all means get the music, its essential. Quote
RDK Posted February 1, 2007 Report Posted February 1, 2007 The jazzrecordsinc stuff is also available legitimately from emusic. Quote
