.:.impossible Posted February 5, 2007 Report Posted February 5, 2007 Just curious. I know there are a handful of people here who review jazz records. Do any of you also review non-jazz records? Quote
kenny weir Posted February 5, 2007 Report Posted February 5, 2007 I do a bunch of country, blues and sometimes other stuff for my newspaper - the older the better at the moment. Quote
mikeweil Posted February 6, 2007 Report Posted February 6, 2007 Any type of percussion-heavy music, no matter what type or style. Quote
7/4 Posted February 6, 2007 Report Posted February 6, 2007 I was reviewing post-classical/"new" music for DMG for a while, but it's been almost a year. Personal issues take up too much time to write reviews. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 7, 2007 Report Posted February 7, 2007 Sometimes. I did some writing for the City Pages a year or two ago that mostly centered on weird rock/folk/underground stuff. Occasionally I review oddball "new music" recordings as well. For example, a recent reissue of the first Blue Gene Tyranny on Lovely... which is... lovely. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted February 9, 2007 Report Posted February 9, 2007 I too wrote for City Pages (in MN), 15+ years ago, can it really have been that long? Both jazz and other stuff.... Quote
BruceH Posted February 10, 2007 Report Posted February 10, 2007 I reviewed some rock albums for a college newspaper a long, long time ago. Quote
Nate Dorward Posted February 11, 2007 Report Posted February 11, 2007 Generally not, though I've been roped into the occasional review of modern classical or rock or whatnot, often because of Cadence's "Hodgepodge & Shorties" section. & of course I review lots of free improv shading into electroacoustic improv shading into electronic composition or improvised Cagean/Feldmanian stuff. -- In general, though there are lots of genres I like (just bought a stack of Berio, Ives, E. Carter, &c, actually), I don't feel I have expertise in areas outside jazz & its close relatives. I really admire folks like Dan Warburton who have a good handle on a pretty wide range of musics, good enough to write well on them all. Quote
