chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted February 11, 2007 Report Posted February 11, 2007 i have never heard this but i know a place that has it on lp (prob. expensive)-- can you guys tell me about it? sounds really interesting. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 11, 2007 Report Posted February 11, 2007 I thnk you will find it sounds very interesting. Wish they'd RVG this sucker. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted February 11, 2007 Report Posted February 11, 2007 I've got it. To me, it's not nearly as good as "A new perspective", despite Grant Green, Freddie Roach and Stanley Turrentine. I feel that the instrumental arrangements are too heavily brass-loaded and the vocal arrangements could have been done much more like a proper Gospel choir (they could have used a proper Gospel choir) to much more soulful effect. As it is, the vocals sound too classically oriented for my taste. MG Quote
Dan Gould Posted February 11, 2007 Report Posted February 11, 2007 Agree with MG - A New Perspective is superior, though that isn't to say that its a terrible record. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 11, 2007 Report Posted February 11, 2007 Well. .. I'm not sure I'll chime in with agreement. I love them both. This one. . .it so strongly reminds me of the great moments of church in my childhood in Philadelphia, all the good bits perhaps, in spirit and mood. And that's enjoyment I hardly get in any other jazz record. Quote

DMP Posted February 11, 2007 Report Posted February 11, 2007 The notes to "Perspective" mention how Byrd wasn't trying to jump on any commercial bandwagon with some contrived gospel/soul mixture. That's clearly not the case with the follow-up. Quote
JohnS Posted February 11, 2007 Report Posted February 11, 2007 I'm in agreement too. A New Perspective is hard to beat. Has Hank as a bonus. Quote

That's clearly not the case with the follow-up. This one is a bit kitsch (esp the last track, an ace, pacy gospel choir/solo tuba face-off) but I love it. It's much darker because of the low brass, much brighter because of all the tambourines (these are really rich DP arrangements), and Herbie, Freddie R and Stanley T make up for DB's foursquare soloing. And what a cover - tho what could match that of A New Perspective? Quote
