neveronfriday Posted April 2, 2007 Report Posted April 2, 2007 Hi, I was wondering how the 2006 Lonehill Complete CD Edition of Dave Bailey's "The Complete 1 + 2 Feet in the Gutter" compares sound-wise to the earlier releases on Koch Jazz (the latest from 2001?). Anyone who had a chance to compare the various (re)issues? Quote
brownie Posted April 2, 2007 Report Posted April 2, 2007 I have not compared the various issues. When I was searching for hardto find vinyls, those Dave Bailey Epics were to be seen on rare occasions for prices in the $50 to $100 range depending on their condition. That was above my price limits. I was very happy when the vinyls were reissued some ten years ago (by Epic?). They had very good sound as was the case with some other rare Epic vinyl reissues. I have kept these Dave Bailey vinyl reissues and am not looking for more! Quote
michel1969 Posted April 2, 2007 Report Posted April 2, 2007 This answer will be of no interest for the topic, but you can buy those Dave Baileys : fine music. Most of the time, blowing sessions. I tend to prefer "2 feets" than "one foot" and "gettin' into". Koch are hard to find, anyway. Quote
neveronfriday Posted April 2, 2007 Author Report Posted April 2, 2007 Thanks guys, but I have the chance of either buying the two Kochs or the complete LoneHill. The two Kochs are readily available from my source. The good thing, as far as I've heard, about the LoneHill reissue is that it contains more than can be gotten singularly: - One Foot in the Gutter - Two Feet In The Gutter Sessions - "Brownie Speaks" (so far only available on a Columbia sampler LP) - Getting’ Into Somethin’ From my source I can get the Koch Gutter disks but not the rest. My problem: I've heard that these have great sound and I'm a bit skeptical about that being the case for the LoneHill reissue. I'd rather get the Kochs with great sound than a mediocre LoneHill with more material, if that should be the case. So, I'm still interested in hearing from anyone who has the LoneHill and can tell me sth about sound quality (is it above average/great?). Quote
Dan Gould Posted April 2, 2007 Report Posted April 2, 2007 Thanks guys, but I have the chance of either buying the two Kochs or the complete LoneHill. The two Kochs are readily available from my source. Then why not buy from a source that isn't known to be a rip off of artists and labels? This stuff was recorded in the early 60s, I believe and is nowhere in the PD. If you care at all about these issues, it should be a no-brainer when a legit reissue exists as an alternative to the pirates. Beyond that, the likelihood that the Lonehill sounds "great" is very small given their history ... Quote
etherbored Posted April 2, 2007 Report Posted April 2, 2007 every lonehill disc i have, all 4 or 5 of them, are so sonically inferior that i can't imagine this session would be an exception... Quote

neveronfriday Posted April 2, 2007 Author Report Posted April 2, 2007 Part of these sessions is only available on the LoneHill. That's why I'm considering it. I'd still like to hear from someone who has the disk. Quote
Dan Gould Posted April 2, 2007 Report Posted April 2, 2007 Part of these sessions is only available on the LoneHill. That's why I'm considering it. If that were the case, why did you ask about sonics in the first place? If sonics aren't your concern, as you now claim, then you should be asking if the session that is only on the Lonehill is worth it. That would be the issue. Obviously you don't have any concern about the question of supporting/not supporting pirates, and that is entirely your perogative. Quote
neveronfriday Posted April 3, 2007 Author Report Posted April 3, 2007 (edited) Some people are just anally retentive about this European PD issue. All I can say is that if I wanted to live in the US, I would move there. I have anywhere around 3000 to 6000 legally purchased CDs from legit outfits (not counting the anywhere around 5000 to 8000 LPs I used to have) and I've paid a hell of a lot of money for many of them, always making sure I get legit versions. so I think I've done my share of supporting artists (although I'm quite sure that many of the so-called legit outfits screwed their artists over good as well). What I don't need is someone telling me what I think, should think or should do, thank you. I just want to know what the LoneHill sounds like. OK? Anyone? Edited April 3, 2007 by neveronfriday Quote
andybleaden Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 (edited) Well I had the first 2 on japanese import and heard the lonehill for the Getting’ Into Somethin’ session which sounded fine to my ageing ears ( which seem to be growing more hairs...what IS going to happen to me that this needs to happen? I would regardless of the lonehill reputation get the seperates as they are nicely produced packaged etc Edited April 3, 2007 by andybleaden Quote
andybleaden Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 All I can say is that if I wanted to live in the US, I would move there. Hey be careful...walls have ears and all that Quote
neveronfriday Posted April 3, 2007 Author Report Posted April 3, 2007 (edited) Andy. Thanks. That was the help I was hoping for. I live in Europe. My walls don't have ears. So, no need to worry. I have difficulties identifying the Japanese versions (usually, they are the pricey ones on the three European Amazons I frequent). Is there a Japanese site I could order these from? andybleaden Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 Sure or get them from Early records and Hiroshi. Actually I think I got mine from the US but cannot remember . Whether you get Japanese or US or German is irrellevant but seperates are slightly nicer to have in my stamp collecty/take em out and play with em / put em back with white gloves on - type of way! JohnS Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 Soundwise the Lonehill set is fine and very good value. That would be my choice. I can't afford too many scruples these days. Quote
andybleaden Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 There you go ...one for the lonehill....like I said the one disc I heard off of this was fine and very gratefully received! Quote

That's great, but if they teach math where you do live, 1960 + 50 years to PD in Europe = Lonehill has ripped off another artist and label. What I don't need is someone telling me what I think, should think or should do, thank you. Exactly what part of that is entirely your perogative. do you not comprehend? Quote
neveronfriday Posted April 3, 2007 Author Report Posted April 3, 2007 Aren't there any other trees in your neighborhood you can bark up, Dan? That PD issue has been discussed to death here. I'm sure all your CDs are legit, right? No burns? No copies? Nothing? No downloads? Ever participated in a BFT here? No? Get yourself a halo. Quote
andybleaden Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 Ah but we in Europe are on EU time using the andorran clock Quote
michel1969 Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 (edited) Get yourself a halo. A Lone Hill (at the top of, of course !) would be more appropriate for Dan Gould. Edited April 3, 2007 by Michel Quote
neveronfriday Posted April 3, 2007 Author Report Posted April 3, 2007 I'm with John S. a few posts back. Got it. Thanks. Quote
neveronfriday Posted April 13, 2007 Author Report Posted April 13, 2007 Well, I've got the LoneHill spinning as I type this and the sound is excellent! Nothing sonically inferior on this reissue! Thanks to the people recommending it here. Quote
