GregK Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 Not much to see other than Ornette.... Quote
AmirBagachelles Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 I see plenty on the bill besides Ornette. I'll start with Galactic, Ralph Stanley, Bromberg, and Gov't Mule. Jeez, there will be plenty for everybody. Quote
7/4 Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 Not even Blood? I like his music, it's gotta be good enough for at least a casual listen. Quote

Jeez, there will be plenty for everybody. I thought I'd like the Mule, but what I have heard so far (the 4-disc live set) hasn't made me want to hear any more. I don't have any idea what those other bands are. A few guys I work with are really excited about this festival, and the music they listen to is that angry-young-man screaming over heavily processed, badly played modern metal stuff that is popular today, so I doubt I would like much of that. I used to like Wilco when they did country; did they play last year when Son Volt was there? That could have been interesting. Quote

NMA are/were a blues band from North Mississippi, much different than the Delta/Chicago stylings we've all heard over the years. The Black Keys, a gtr/drum duo are a rockier band coming from the same place with gtr solos that are a bit noisier than melodic guitar hero. Blood is the mud of the earth. He used to play with Ornette many years ago. Quote
WD45 Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 Not much to see other than Ornette.... IIRC, you are a King Crimson fan? You might enjoy Tool, then. Quote
GregK Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 is that Louvin guy of the "Louvin Brothers" (Atomic Power, etc.)? Quote
GregK Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 Not much to see other than Ornette.... IIRC, you are a King Crimson fan? You might enjoy Tool, then. Yeah, I know all about Tool. Other than the similarity in guitar and drumming to KC, they haven't done much for me yet. I can see why others like them so much, though-lots of noise! Just not for me. Quote

donald byrd 4 EVA Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 there are some decent bands playing. ornette playing really makes it worthwhile. arent the ticket prices insane? Quote
donald byrd 4 EVA Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 ewwwww....sting? no thanks Quote
7/4 Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 ewwwww....sting? no thanks I'll wait for the Police live DVD. Maybe it'll come on TV in the middle of the night in a few years or I'll find it in the trash for free. Quote
.:.impossible Posted April 10, 2007 Author Report Posted April 10, 2007 I think they are planning to sell 100,000 tickets. That has to be more than any Dead show, not counting the parking lots of course. We are going to see Ben Harper a week before this festival with a bunch of friends. My wife saw him years ago in a gym. Should be a lot of fun. Good group of friends. He gets lots of radio play around here, as does Xavier Rudd. I'd like to hear him play live. Actually, most of these bands get radio play around here. Lots of people excited about Hot Tuna after their showing at Merlefest last year. I see a few possible collaborations in the works here. Imagine Ornette and Blood getting up together in front of all those people. GK, your friends are probably most excited by Clutch. I used to see them in high school. I think they came down from Baltimore. Quote

donald byrd 4 EVA Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 the flaming lips are perfect for such a large venue. the black angels are pretty good. something about bob weir makes me not like him. he seems like hes sheisty, like with all the live recording and filesharing. they should invite donald byrd next year Quote

sal Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 All commentary aside, this is a great thing not only for Ornette, but for jazz in general. I've been to Bonnaroo before, and my experience is that its a very well planned and executed festival. Best of all, its filled with many, many open minded music fans who are not only there to see their favorite acts, but to discover new music as well. Its no wonder that so many artists who have performed there speak so highly of it. Not only is Ornette playing there, but he is listed as one of the major acts of the festival. I guarantee you that the majority of the people there will have never seen him before, and a good amount of them probably have never even heard of him. And you know what? Ornette is gonna blow their fucking minds. Its gonna be a beautiful thing. I wish I could be there to see it. Quote

He can "blow their fucking minds" and what good are they then? Lots of "beautiful things" of no real importance. Quote
