Lazaro Vega Posted May 20, 2007 Report Posted May 20, 2007 Laz -- do you know George Jones well &/or can you at least get ahold of "You Couldn't Get The Picture" from 1991? hell, maybe i'll even try to do the rapidshare or whatever upload. ("i'm upping loads!!!") (one free handiwipe to any goofball who gets the low-brow reference.) it is, perhaps, thee peak of a certain style of superficially schlock production taken to level of profundity/darkness rarely matched & never exceeded in popular music. if we wanna make jazz analogy think peak Sonny (Rollins, not Clark) vs. seemingly dubious source material; vox qua vox ---> Sinatra or Dick Haymes. if ya'll can really "feel" Ella like that, well... ok, but I don't believe it. edc ozona, fla George curl my phrase Jones...yes, but not that record. I don't really feel Ella on some profound level in general, but I like her version of "Bewitched" simply because, as Jim has pointed out, of the straight way she sings the melody, pretty voice, good timing and there's something true in her emotional reading of that number (it's with minimal accompaniement and sung fairly slow). I think she sucks on "Lush Life." There are a few jam sessions where she's fun, and though people ralph at her scatting, "Lady Be Good" and "How High The Moon" are classic, popular records of that era. One should at least know them. George Jones, though, man -- that's another twist. Quote
