Dmitry Posted September 8, 2003 Report Posted September 8, 2003 Saw it used [oop for a while, I think]. I dunno about this one. I know it's M-Base, but how good is this cd? With Terri Lyne Carrington,Jack DeJohnette,Paul Bollenback[don't know him],Charles Covington,Steve Moss,Marvin Sewell,Ed Howard. Quote
relyles Posted September 8, 2003 Report Posted September 8, 2003 Have not listened to it in a while and could be confusing it with one of Thomas' other recordings, but my recollection is that it is one of his better releases. Thomas' recordings can be a little dense, so if you are already familiar with Thomas I would say it is worthwhile. Not sure how someone completely new to Thomas' recordings would react. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted September 8, 2003 Report Posted September 8, 2003 (edited) Although I haven't loved every single thing I've ever heard by Thomas, I think I've heard more that I've liked (often quite a bit!!), than I've heard that I've found lacking. I don't have "Exile's Gate", so I can't comment on it specifically, but it looks pretty good on paper. I have a couple Thomas CD's that I really love, and sometime's he's really a monster. When he's a sideman on a date, I usually take notice. How much they askin'?? $9 or less, I'd say get it. Over $9 - it's your call. My two favorite Thomas albums (with him as the leader) are... Pariah's Pariah (Winter & Winter, 1999) and Found on Sordid Streets (Winter & Winter, 1998) Hey, Comrad, if you buy it and don't like it - I'll probably trade ya something for it - how's that sound? Joe G Posted September 8, 2003 Report Posted September 8, 2003 Paul Bollenback is an outstanding guitarist IMO. Has worked a lot with Joey D. Quote
Claude Posted September 9, 2003 Report Posted September 9, 2003 It's a very intense electric session, one of my favourite jazz albums of the 90's. Two similar Gary Thomas albums I like alot are "Seventh Quadrant" (Enja) and "Till we have faces" (with Pat Metheny, JMT, OOP) Gary Thomas (All Music Guide Quote

Metheny plays well on this, in a chunky aggressive style - kind of half "out". Simon Weil Quote
