chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 im playing my New time shuffle lp right now which is mint and really doesn't need upgrading: also have the "2fer" with the other part of the session...... .....but those other tracks....the last 7 or so....a lot of em are mancini tunes.... do i need to buy Blues for Del cd conn. reissue just for these tracks? are they all ballads? are any funky? swing? what are these tracks like? these sessions are by far my favorite turrentine sessions so i think id like em no matter what, but i would like to ask you guys about them. Shawn Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 (edited) Chewy, If you are enjoying the albums I highly recommend picking up this disc. The sound quality is far improved from the vinyl issues (the acoustic guitars for example have added presence and really leap from the speakers), this helps to augment Pearson's beautiful arrangements. The bonus tracks... Days Of Wine And Roses (same arrangement as Pearson's Now Hear This) - Turrentine really rips into this one, in fact "attacks" might be a better description, very nice Tyner solo as well. Come Back To Me - Nice mid tempo swinger (you can hear Turrentine's exclamations between phrases, pretty cool). Silver Tears - Lush, introspective ballad. Lovely use of bass clarinet in the ensemble passages, Turrentine's tone is gorgeous. A Bluish Bag - Nice groove number, similar in mood to The Spoiler. With This Ring - Another mid-tempo swinger, probably the least successful of the bonus tracks but it really picks up steam at the midpoint with some great Turrentine as usual. I can understand why the session wasn't released "on it's own", but there isn't a tune here that should have remained shelved. If you're a fan of Pearson & Turrentine this one is not to be missed. I'm very excited to hear the follow up disc mentioned in the liner notes. Edited August 3, 2007 by Shawn Quote
Parkertown Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 And Aric: They ended up calling the cd, "A Bluish Bag," not "Blues For Del." Quote

If that's the case, this is one 'Conn' from the latest batch that I will nab. The 'new' material looks nice too. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted August 8, 2007 Report Posted August 8, 2007 Yeah, it's on my list... MG Quote
JohnS Posted August 8, 2007 Report Posted August 8, 2007 I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would. It's had a lot of plays. Quote
shaft Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 I like it too - a lot ,-) It gets alot of play here as well. /Shaft PS. But of course I knew it would be OK - I mean it's turrentine on Blue Note. What can go wrong? Quote

Kyo Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 "Always something there". I've never heard (or even seen) it. Is it really that bad? Quote
Shawn Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 "Always something there". I've never heard (or even seen) it. Is it really that bad? I've heard worse...but it's the only Turrentine Blue Note album I have that only got played once...and I'm a Turrentine fanatic. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 I found the tracks in question to be maybe half a step down from the previously issued stuff...their worst fault being a kinda neither fish nor fowl lack of purpose, better in some sense than Always Something There or the Look of Love, but at least those were what they were (high class cheese) and can be enjoyed as such. Bottom line is that when they get arouns to the rest of the unissued stuff from this era I'll buy it, both to hear Stan and to try and figure out 'what were they thinking'. Quote

Apart from the newie, which I just haven't got round to, it's the only ST BN I've never bought, nor wanted to buy. heard it plenty, when I was working in a record shop in '69. MG Quote
