do skateboarders use stick-um or something like that on their shoes and board?

Just sneakers and grip tape (like sandpaper).

Good L-O-R-D! Glad the guy was okay...but it furthers my opinion that if people were supposed to skate they would have been born with retractable wheels in their feet.

Best in the business? I would've put him on a stretcher just to be safe!!! Sweet mercy, that was insane!

Looked more like three paramedics working for free tickets.

While all of them did nothing but sit and look at him, my favorite was the fat guy that stopped about 6 feet away to sit and look at him.

It's almost as if he didn't want to get too close and grossed out in case there was blood or a bone sticking out.

Brown begins recovery

Skateboarder Jake Brown, whose 45-foot free-fall Thursday night brought a hush to the crowd at Staples Center, remains hospitalized after suffering bruises of the liver and lung, stress fractures in his vertebrae and a small fracture on the top of one hand.

Brown, 32, who was injured during the big air competition on the mega-ramp during a silver medalist performance, is expected to be released from the hospital today or Sunday and make a full recovery.

"Doctors said there was no paralysis or anything like that," said Bryce Kanights, team manager for Adidas, which is among Brown's corporate sponsors.

Kanights was critical of X Games medical personnel for not immobilizing Brown immediately and placing him in a stretcher.

A hospital spokesman refused to discuss Brown's condition.

The Carlsbad skateboarder, who missed the transition after soaring nearly 20 feet above the 27-foot quarterpipe and landed backside-and-feet first on flat wood, lay motionless for about two minutes.

He was rolled over a minute or so later and helped to his feet eight minutes after the fall. He was then escorted to a hallway and placed in a wheelchair.

He also suffered a mild concussion and could not immediately remember performing a 720-degree spin across the 70-foot gap leading to the quarterpipe -- the first time that maneuver has been accomplished in competition.

But he was still in good spirits.

"One of the first things he did was ask for Bubblicious gum," Kanights said.

X-Games definitely needs to step up the level of on-site medical care. How they handled this was amateur at best, potentially felonious at worst.

CARSON - Jake Brown remains in California Hospital Medical Center in downtown L.A., bleeding from his liver after Thursday's life-threatening Skateboard Big Air fall at The Staples Center.

The skateboarder from Carlsbad suffered a stress fracture in his vertebrae, a fracture on the top of his hand, a concussion and contusions of his liver and a lung, Team adidas manager Bryce Kanights said Friday. Brown is sponsored by adidas.

Brown, on his fifth and final run Thursday, was trying to become one of the first to do a 270-degree spin over the gap. But he never had a chance to do his planned McTwist 540 on the quarterpipe ramp.

Going faster than 40 mph after the landing, he lost control at the top of the pipe and fell 45 feet to the bottom of the ramp. He landed feet and tailbone first, his shoes popping off on impact. He lay motionless for two minutes before ESPN emergency personnel rolled him onto his back four minutes later. He walked off, with help from the emergency crew and other skateboarders, eight minutes after the accident.

"The first thing he asked me was for Bubblicious gum," Kanights said. "He wanted to come to the Street competition. He's a trooper."

Kanights said Brown will remain hospitalized until the bleeding in the liver stops. He is no longer bleeding from his lung. He is expected to make a full recovery.

A word from Mr. Jim after applying the necessary footwork -

"Hey guys, remember those balls you used to have?"
