brownie Posted October 27, 2007 Report Posted October 27, 2007 Jazz Hot, the French monthly which was founded in 1935 by Charles Delaunay is to stop publishing at the end of this year, it was announced yesterday. Jazz Hot has a claimed circulation of 10,000. It was one of the oldest jazz review still in circulation. Quote
Tom Storer Posted October 27, 2007 Report Posted October 27, 2007 I had heard this was coming. People I've spoken to are not optimistic about the chances of Jazz Magazine, either... Quote
brownie Posted October 27, 2007 Author Report Posted October 27, 2007 Oui! Jazz Magazine and Jazzman tend to duplicate each other. Which is no wonder since they almost share their editorial offices (at least they were in separate rooms last time I visited the place a couple of years ago). The recent departure of Philippe Carles from Jazz Magazine bode no good Would be very bad news to see Jazz Magazine disappear after Jazz Hot. I have sentimental attachments (and many souvenirs) from both! I have to confess I have bought very few copies of the magazines in recent years. There is much more interesting news and knowledge about the music now on the web! Quote
bertrand Posted October 27, 2007 Report Posted October 27, 2007 Brownie, How is Philippe Carles' health? Very sad to see Jazz Hot go. I learned so much from thie publication and Jazz Magazine when I was living in France (1980-1987) and just getting into jazz. Bertrand. Quote
brownie Posted October 27, 2007 Author Report Posted October 27, 2007 Bertrand, last I heard Carles health was better. He reached 65 last year and retired from his Jazz Magazine job! Quote
Tom Storer Posted October 27, 2007 Report Posted October 27, 2007 In the editorial of the issue that's just out, the editor, Yves Sportis, says it's a "suspension" and promises they'll be back, only bigger, better and more modern. No mention made of when he thinks that might be. Jazz Hot has an illustrious history but their current Marsalisite orthodoxy is a bit hard to take. I'm glad Jazz Magazine hasn't folded yet--I love to read Jacques Réda's column. Quote
brownie Posted October 27, 2007 Author Report Posted October 27, 2007 -I love to read Jacques Réda's column. Oh boy, so do I! Réda is one of the very best. A 1983 article by Réda on Jimmy Jones (in French and better adjust those eyeglasses) Quote
Niko Posted October 27, 2007 Report Posted October 27, 2007 I have to confess I have bought very few copies of the magazines in recent years. There is much more interesting news and knowledge about the music now on the web! same here, i always feel a little bad when i see those jazz magazines i feel a little like i am no taking care of my fellow jazz fans enough, but then there is so much stupid crap in them (last time i looked into jazz podium there was a weirdly nationalist article that argued that Jutta Hipp's alcoholism was "better" than the heroin problems of her american contemporaries) and industry dictated things i don't want to see ( at least Jazzthing once gave a top ten of "ugliest promo photos we printed last year" ), this board is so much better Quote
P.L.M Posted October 27, 2007 Report Posted October 27, 2007 (edited) Glad that IMPROJAZZ is still alive and well. Edited October 27, 2007 by P.L.M Quote
brownie Posted January 23, 2010 Author Report Posted January 23, 2010 Jazz Hot is back in business after a too long hiatus and publishing every 3 or 4 months nowadays. Harold Mabern is on the cover of the latest edition Quote
king ubu Posted January 23, 2010 Report Posted January 23, 2010 ...and Jazz Magazine has swallowed Jazzman in the meantime... Quote
