It was recorded on June 14, 1999.

The ESP NYA4 struck me as one of ESP major releases. I was afraid the reunion disc might be a hit and miss affair. It was not.

Great fan of that DIW CD!

Would love to hear another reunion disc by the crew!

Have to play the DIW again. It's probably been 4 or 5 years.

Yes, but strangely enough, that's just a hair less than a quarter of my life (yikes!) ...

As I understand it - and this may be total bullshit - a wedge was driven into the original lineup when Zorn replaced Tchicai on some gigs, and that another reunion is unlikely.

Agreed, the 35th reunion disc is very nice indeed. I don't have a copy myself but we do at KBCS. It's interesting playing it back-to-back with the older material. It's on a similar level of inspiration IMHO.

Yeah, I've seen Tchicai in NY and Chicago on some excellent gigs. He was living in California not long ago, I believe. I know he still has a house in rural France somewhere, and that's where I've reached him easiest.

Maybe it's just me, but Zorn seems like a strange fit for that band.

Nice to have the reunion cd but it doesn't compare to the ESP, Fontana or America albums imo.

Since Tchicai doesn't play alto anymore - much - I wonder if that led to Zorn's occasional inclusion in the group.

Listened to the reunion recording today. Sounded very fine to me, especially considering that - at least as I remember - they didn't have a lot of time together before recording. For want of a better term, there's an organic flow among the musicians (including Tchicai). Zorn might fit in, but Tchicai sounds fine to me - no need for Zorn - imo.

I saw him last winter in Winters, Ca. John came to Davis, Ca where he used to live and teach to see old friends and his daughter, who still lives there. He's still living in France afaik, unless he moved recently. He's playing more tenor and bass clarinet at his shows these days, but I don't know if he's stopped playing the alto altogether.

It is shorthand for "Esperanto."

The initial ESP-Disk' release was Ni Kantu en Esperanto, ESP 1001 (1963), a sing/speak-along record of Esperanto, the "universal" language. Bernard Stollman, the label's founder, is still an avid Esperantist.
