From the first season of the original Star Trek, the episode with the rock boring entity called the Horta. The scene where Mr. Spock mind melds with the creature is a classic. It may be the first time in the series that Spock used that technique. I also think it's the first time Dr. McCoy protests one of Captain Kirk's directives by saying "I'm a doctor, Jim, not a (fill in the blank). In this case, bricklayer.

I'm also partial to the card playing scene in the episode where Kirk, Spock and McCoy beam down to the planet that's run by gangsters. It's the one where Kirk is trying to teach some of the hoods how to play a game he calls Fisbin. Actually, that whole episode is pretty amusing.

Up over and out.

Excellent calls, Dave!

I never watched the successor programs, to me it wasn't Star Trek without Kirk and the rest. But there were a lot of both intentional and unintentional comic moments in those 70-odd shows.

Season 1 generally sucked with only a few exceptions.

Season 2 is genuinely better -- there are several good episodes and two great ones. I think the writers were starting to figure out what to do with the show.

Season 3 was the big leap forward and season 4 the best. However, while I agree that later seasons were not as good as 4, season 6 was probably the 2nd best of the series and season 5, while somewhat erratic, had three of the episodes the series ever ran. Season 7 was probably the weakest aside from the 1st 2 but that's probably because they were working on other stuff.

I agree that seasons 5 and 6 both had quite a few good episodes. What are the three episodes from season 5 that you consider among the best the series ever ran? Just curious (we all have our favorites.)

Ha!  My response is only 7 years late.  But the three episodes are:

DARMOK ("They were... victorious. But... Enkidu fell to the ground, struck down by the gods. And Gilgamesh... wept bitter tears, saying, "He who was my companion, through adventure and hardship, is gone forever." ")

THE INNER LIGHT (magnificent storytelling)

I, BORG (in some ways, the best Borg episode, though it killed them as an interesting villain)
