Where is it available? My local jazz CD specialist shop had one copy on the shelf. Looked intriguing so I went for it. Must have been a special import for it to hit the shelf over here. Update - click on link on the first post. Amazon UK seem to be selling it for about £15.60 Edited April 14, 2009 by sidewinder

sidewinder
Verdict - definitely a thumbs up. Especially so for any of us Don Ellis fans. The main feature is a well made and balanced documentary with some very nice and rare film footage. Ellis with Leonard Bernstein and symphonic orchestra in NYC in one of the Third Stream concerts (Orchestra USA? - also in film - Benny Golson and Richard Davis). Some nice semi-psychedelic tracks from a 1968 San Francisco arts TV show around the time of the 'Shock Treatment' LP and also footage from the 'Underground' tour taken at Tanglewood, with vocalist Patti Allen. Sadly, no footage of the 'Tears Of Joy' band, although some nice 35mm slides of this band touring are shown in the documentary. The special features include a truly wild version of 'Turkish Bath' taken from that 68 San Fran show, more interview footage from Milcho Leviev and others and a nice little performance by an Ellis Alumni band filmed at 'Whisky A Go Go' in LA back in 2005 led by Leviev and playing 'Pussy Wiggle Stomp' and 'Indian Lady'. A nice tribute DVD !

sidewinder
Just ordered it. Thanks for the heads up. Good move - I'm sure you'll enjoy it. First thing I did after watching it was put on the CD of 'Electric Bath' and crank the volume up.

sidewinder
Thanks for the review, sidewinder! Sounds like it's well worth it. Yeah, it's so good that I'm going to give myself a repeat showing tonight. Just wished they'd included the whole of the 'San Francisco Arts 1968' show - but I guess most of the tracks are included (30 minute show?) It would also have been nice to see the whole of that Bernstein/Schuller symphonic performance. Apparently Eric Dolphy was in the lineup ! A nice tribute DVD ! Thanks very much for your comments on my Film ELECTRIC HEART and the DVD Release. You can purchase Directly from http://www.DonEllisFilm.com either from the Distributor or Amazon U.K. and Sleepy Night Records. Sad to say, most of the footage found was in poor shape and what my Film features had to be painstakingly restored, both the video and audio. The Film is 70 minutes and just won the Grand Prize for Best Feature Documentary at The 2009 Kansas City Film Festival. Gary Gillies, Producer at Sleepy Night Records added all the extras on the DVD including his own Tribute to Don Ellis. I hope you all enjoy the one and only Film ever made about Don Ellis. I'm still in need of a North American Distributor and someone to Distribute my Film into Universities Music Departments and Library's in the USA & Canada. mikeweil
Ordering through amazon.de didn't work, now with your link to amazon.co.uk it did. Very much looking forward to this DVD. I remember seeing a snippet of a Monterey performance from the late 1960's on German TV as a teen that left me mesmerized ... hope it is on this disc. There's about 5-10 minutes of footage from the Monterey concert. One of the numbers has a Glenn Ferris trombone solo and the other track is a Patti Allen vocal feature I think. I was not allowed to use any of the 1967 "Live" at The Monterey Jazz Festival Footage for my Commercial Film and it is only available through a Stock Footage Company in Los Angeles. However, I do have a PROMO DVD that was utilized during my Funding Stage that does show the Piece "New Horizons" from that Concert. I can only ask for a Donation for this DVD and it cannot be used for any Commercial purposes. If you want the DVD, I cannot even suggest a price you can pay though PAYPAL at my verified Business E-MAIL address: Centralhsd@earthlink.net Or send check made payable to John Vizzusi, Filmmaker I hope you enjoy ELECTRIC HEART DVD. Hello, this is the Filmmaker of ELECTRIC HEART. My Film features several segements of the 1969 "Live" at The Concord Jazz Festival with The Don Ellis Band with Jazz Vocalist Patti Allen during their Underground Tour. I was not allowed to use any of The Monterey Concert footage Produced by Ralph Gleason for WNET New York. Thanks John V.
sidewinder
Thanks John - Of course, it was the Concord performance, not the Monterey. Too bad about the limitations on usage but within the limitations you managed to include some great footage.
mikeweil
Having been deeply touched by the music of Don Ellis in my teens already, this documentary really moves me. Ellis deserves a place among the top rankd of big band jazz, and he has been more or less denied that by people with a narrower view of the music. This inspired me to pull his early quartet sessions from the shelf, and I had to reaffirm my thought that he was one of the greatest trumpet players of his generation. I think with Ellis it is you either get it or you don't - I thank the creator for Don Ellis and his music. And I thank you for this beautiful film. I will pm you regarding your offer ...
