Don't have an answer, just bumping this one up in hopes that someone else does. All google seems to find is stuff about the movie Ray, and that would have been a hard photo to take...

It may be from a performance at the Academy Awards at the time that "In the Heat of the Night" was nominated. The movie, not the song. The movie won best picture.

Wrong timing. The LP issued in August 1961, with that sleeve. In fact, the photo may be considerably earlier than that. It was taken by Jay Maisel, who used to do sleeve photos for Atlantic in the 1956/57 period.

actually, some wiseass told him that was the microphone - he was presenting the best spoken word LP award to Helen Keller, who unfortunately couldn't find the awards ceremony -
