Teasing the Korean Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 Curious if anyone has any of these LP collections. Curiously, they list song titles and composers, but not artists. I am told that this series is stylistically compiled, but on the volumes I've seen there is no clear indication. Can anyone describe what the various volumes sound like? Quote
captainwrong Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 Basically these are the cornerstone of Golden Age hip hop. There's tons of good tunes on these. Quote
Noj Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 I've got quite a few of them. Captain Wrong is, well...right. Quote
captainwrong Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 There's another series I like called Dusty Fingers which focuses on Pete Rock samples. Also highly recommended. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted May 14, 2008 Author Report Posted May 14, 2008 So are they arranged stylistically? Is there like a Latin funk volume or a Brazilian volume? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 I suggest getting a solo record by Baby Dodds. There are a couple of 'em. Quote
Noj Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 (edited) There's another series I like called Dusty Fingers which focuses on Pete Rock samples. Also highly recommended. I have most of those as well. The label, Strictly Beats, has done comps focusing on De La Soul, The Beat Nuts, and A Tribe Called Quest. I'm not sure whether or not these comps are legitimate or if they are bootlegs. Definitely a good way to cheat and hear original tracks before tracking down all those albums one at a time. I'd love to pick up some Baby Dodds, I've enjoyed the track Jim included on his BFT for some time. Edited May 15, 2008 by Noj Quote
captainwrong Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 Booty boot, to be sure. UB&B isn't arranged in any particular way. And the Baby Dodds LP on the Smithsonian's label is pretty groovy too. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted May 15, 2008 Author Report Posted May 15, 2008 So can any of you tell me if the volumes are arranged stylistically? Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted May 15, 2008 Author Report Posted May 15, 2008 No, TTK. Each disc is extremely various. Thanks. Are there any volumes that avoid the 80s stuff and focus on 60s or 70s? Quote
Noj Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 There doesn't seem to be much focus to them at all, save providing sampled tracks, rare or common. For example, Discs 1&2 contain the following tracks: Paul Butterfield Blues Band "Mary Mary" Wilbur Bad Bascombe "Black Grass" The Winstons "Amen Brother" Seventh Wonder "Daisy Lady" D.C. LaRue "Indescreet" Carla & Rufus Thomas "Do The Funky Penguin" Archie Bell & The Drells "Get Me Back On Time, Engine #9" Juice "Catch A Groove" The Rolling Stones "Honky Tonk Women" Funkadelic "You'll Like It Too" Roy Ayers "The Boogie Back" Bertini Taccani "Chella'lla" All over the place, 60s, 70s, 80s...
