seeline Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 (edited) Believe it or not, I'm a sucker for Yiddish theatre music and history... Here's a funny album (with lots of parody stuff, including nifty spins on stereotypes) that I really like - Of course, the fact that most of the people involved are doing parodies of parodies (and gently making fun of themselves in the process) is one of the things that I like most. "Pesach in Portugal" might be my fave cut. (You Europeans know the song being parodied as "Coimbra," I think - it got renamed "April in Portugal" for the US. The lead singer here is openly gay, which is part of the "gently making fun..." concept.) My taste for lighter-hearted humor is showing, I think... Edited July 8, 2008 by seeline Quote
ghost of miles Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 This is the same label that reissued Fred Katz's FOLK SONGS FOR FAR OUT FOLK last year. Quote
JSngry Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 Speaking of Fred Katz, has anybody heard this one? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 Do any of these recordings come with jewel boxes? Quote
AllenLowe Posted July 22, 2008 Report Posted July 22, 2008 actually, if you order them, Jewel comes to your house and performs an un-natural act - Quote
JSngry Posted July 22, 2008 Report Posted July 22, 2008 Hard for me to imagaine anything more un-natural than that Poitier/Katz side... Quote
king ubu Posted September 29, 2009 Report Posted September 29, 2009 bump.... Sale of four Reboot Stereophonic titles, including "Jewface", going on at Allegro Music this week. I think I'll order two or three - is the Barry Sisters as horrible as it looks, or is the look just part of its, well... off-kilter charm? link Here's the label's homepage: http://www.rebootstereophonic.com/ Quote
seeline Posted September 30, 2009 Report Posted September 30, 2009 (edited) There's a fair amount of Barry Sisters material in print, if you do some looking. I like them a lot, along with a lot of Yiddish theatre music and Yiddish-language pop from the 40s-mid 50s. But... that's just me. You can listen to a song by them here. (Reissued as part of the Yiddish Radio Project.) Edited September 30, 2009 by seeline Quote
